A couple of weeks ago, I hefted and Expert II at the local Office Depot. It was a kind of muted, or matte, perhaps, silver/gray. While larger than a Hemisphere, I was surprised to see that it felt not too fat -- and was also fairly light -- actually kind of a Three Bears sort of "just right." Not liking the color or the $120 price, I went out and found a black matte model, GT, which arrived a week or so ago. Well, that's a solid pen all right, with a buttery smooth M nib, but after going back to Office Depot today and holding the other one again, this black one seems heavier and thicker in my hand. I really can't write with it, tell the truth, and am amazed at the difference. I'll be selling the black on Classifieds here soon, as soon as my son can help me take and load the pics.

So, is it customary for these pens to weigh differently, depending on the color and finish? Also, if that is the case, does anyone have a sense of where the blue lacquer, CT model might figure into the weight continuum? I kind of like that one. Altogether, I'm a tad confused right now -- a state I'm familiar with as one is familiar with any life companion, but in this case would be more than happy to resolve... :0) ...if possible...

Thanks -- and best to all...

Could it be that this satin chrome finish -- I think that's what it might be called -- is pretty much the body of the pen without anything else added, and the matte finish is an extra layer added onto the original body -- thus adding weight and girth? Could also the gold trim add more weight than the chrome?

Anyone?

Best...

Is it possible that you purchased an Expert rather than an Expert II. I believe that the Expert is a thicker pen than the Expert II.

I can't see Office Despot still having any original Expert I's in stock.

Though I'm not sure of the dimensional differences, since the E1 doesn't have the brass
barrell of the E2 it IS CONDSIDERABLY lighter.

With the unusual nib of the E1 I can't see the OP even thinking an E1 and an E2 were the same pen.

I considered that, but I tend to agree with Ocala Guy. This black matte, gold trim pen has plenty of brass beneath the matte, and the Expert I was supposed to be plastic.

I really think that it is the lack of coating on the satin chrome Expert II, while the black matte has to be an additional layer around the original brass barrel. Perhaps, in fact, the satin chrome is a separate kind of material altogether, not even including brass, but rather a lighter material of some sort.

I can't say, but while I've not had both in my hand at the same time, the difference is striking enough that I don't believe I'm making it up.

I really like the nib and size of the section on the Ex. II . If, for whatever reason, I can obtain those benefits with a lighter barrel, then satin chrome it is... :0)

Thanks to you for your reply, Ray Man, and also Ocala Fl Guy.
