Full Version: Damaged Piston in M215?

Hey All,

I am new to the forum and new to Pelikans. I recently bought a Pelikano and was so pleased with it that I decided to spring for a blue and black M215 from Richard Binder. Well, the packaged pen arrived before I got home and my father did me the "favor" of filling my pen for me. The pen writes beautifully, however, I was curious to try out the famous piston action on the pen for myself so I emptied the pen to refill it. I twisted the knob until it was fully extended. However, when I began to draw the ink, I noticed that the knob turns freely almost a half rotation before engaging the threads in the piston mechanism. I asked my mother if dad had any issues with filling the pen and she said he spent almost twenty minutes trying to open the back of the pen to put the cartridge in before he read the instructions!!!! Since I have never dealt with a Pelikan or a piston filler before, is this amount of play (a half rotation's worth) normal? Did my father damage the pen? If this is not normal, is this going to cause me problems later? Thanks for any help or suggestions anyone can make.... Yours, Matt.

Totally normal. I can't say if your father did any damage, but the play in the knob before engagement is totally normal.

My M200's knob moves a bit before the piston starts, no problem.

Hey, jm and spaceman....thank you for your input. It puts my mind at ease. I've wanted a good fountain pen, specifically one of the Pelikan 215's since I first saw them in the late 90's and it would be a real damper on my fun if I had to send it back for repairs right after I got it. Thanks again!
