Full Version: Omas' red -- got any?

Can you give me any suggestions/recommendations/warnings etc about Omas' red ink ?
I am mostly interested in (1) wetness and (2) brightness/intensity/"purity". I.e. no burgundy or pink, please. At least the brightness of Omas' red on my screen looks nice.
I find big differences in Skrip's, Pelikan's and Waterman's reds, still want a "better" red, but I don't really want to collect reds yet.
(Most comparisons of ink colours involve of course blues and especiall blue-blacks but not reds. Omas' red is not (yet) in the Ink Review here).

Or, what reds do you really like which are wet and bright?

no idea on the omas red, but a "pure red" will not be so deep and intense, but might meet your characteristics of bright. Widowmaker is the best as-is red I know that is deep and intense and not too off-red. If you don't mind off-reds, then you have some other great choices.

Skrip Red is a little more orangey, but I'd say a little more pure, and is the brightest red I've seen.

I haven't seen Levenger Cardinal Red, but I've heard great things about it, and I think it might fit your criteria.

I didn't like PR Dakota Red, but it was bright!

Has anyone tried the new Diamine Ruby yet?

Thanks for the reply. Most of the reds which are "somewhat-but-also-up-to-very" off-reds, I don't really like them all that much.
I forgot to mention that I looked at the latest posts here on "red" (74821, 73519, and 73180, which are of course not searchable here as such) but didn't find what I was looking for.
Levenger's Fireball Red has been mentioned as a "good" red but their site doesn't show it (any more). Maybe it has been discontinued. At least the name Fireball sounds great!

Skrip probably comes closest - it stays bright when dry. PR's Dakota red after that, probably, though it has a bit more pink in its make-up, and Noodler's Nikita, though it has rather more orange. Omas Red (at least, if my bottle's typical) is nothing like these - much darker, a bit reminiscent of red wine but without any hint of purple; or blood that almost dry; or a darker, more saturated, version of Visconti's Bordeaux (it looks nothing like the swatch on pendemonium's site). For my taste, a much nicer red to write with than, say, Skrip, but not suitable if you want an eye-popping editor's red.

I did a review of some Omas colors a while ago including the red ink (but mine came in cartridges, so I don't know if this is the same color which now comes in bottles):

Michael, thanks a lot! I must confess, I forgot to look at your site regarding Omas' inks. I have often looked at your site and always found it very informative. Sorry.
But I did look at some other sites and they only mentioned "red" but not "Vespucci Red", so I thought that "Vespucci Red"was probably discontinued.
Long story short, I'll just buy a bottle of any bright red Omas I can find (hey, good joke in German, 'eh?).

That's interesting. The colour of the ink in my bottle (bought c. a year ago either at the DC pen show or at a local store in Philadelphia - can't remember), which is merely labeled "red", is nothing like the plain red in your review. Instead, it's like the very darkest patches in your Americo Vespucci red, but without a hint of pink. I wonder if they just slapped a new label on the old bottles?

Simon,

That's exactly what I'm afraid of (well only a bit afraid). As you say, some companys talk about their X red and their Y red but in thE end they change everything (including the actual colors) and just call the one such color they offer "red".

Sorry, posted this one before I was finished.

Bright, near-middle-spectrum reds in Clark's Sampler:
PR Dakota, Omas, Waterman, new Sheaffer Skrip, Levenger Cardinal, a few Noodler's reds (some stain-removable and some truly permanent), and maybe J Herbin Rouge Caroubier and Rouge Opera in wet writers.

Another suited to your requirement: Diamine Passion Red.

Not suited to your requirements:
Levenger Fireball is reddish orange, very bright, and free flowing. It has been discontinued, at least in cartridges.
The Lamy and Pelikan 4001 reds are reddish orange and less bright. Several people have complained about the Pelikan red not flowing well.
Parker Quink Red is more of a soft magenta.
