The first trick I'd point you to, Nicholas, is to re-size your pictures to something manageable like 640x480 or thereabouts. This will, due to the size, trick the eye into thinking that the picture is clearer, as well as keeping the viewer from having to scroll to see the entire image. There's a pretty good freeware app for Windows called IRFanView that does a good job of this. For Mac, there's plenty of AppleScripts out there that'll take a picture and re-size it for you.
As far as getting better pictures overall, I'd recommend using as much natural light as you can (i.e., not lamps and such), and lots of practice.
(For what it's worth, I'm in the process of putting a thread together with a few resources, other threads, and some tips & tricks to help fellow FPNr's enjoy their pictures a little more.)
