Full Version: Roses are red, the ink I seek is blue

I have heard several things but let me jot my wish list:

I would like a blue that is a wow blue, a true blue, and American tried and true blue, in essence a Presidential blue
I would like an ink that flows as freely as the ink from John Hancock pens bold and flamboyant
I would like an ink that dries fast but does not feather
I would like a bullet proof ink that required a hammer and chisel to remove it

I have heard that Aurora makes some great ink. What are your thoughts and comments to add from the collective's experience?
I also have Baystate Blue but due to staining I keep in a cheapy pen.

What do you like? hate? love? tolerate? details please...

Personally I like Visconti Blue, but it is not bulletproof.

The Noodler's Eternal Bullet-Proof Lurury Blue looks nice too.

Ah, yes. I believe that would be the Unobtanium Ink that one hears so much about. wink.gif

Noodler's Luxury Blue gummed up the pens I tried it in. I don't need the bullet-proof aspect so I use J. Herbin Eclat de Saphir which would, in my opinion, fill your bill otherwise. I have used a ton of blues (Waterman, Pelikan, Visconti, Private Reserve, Sailor, Sheaffer, Swisher's, as well as Noodler's) and I'd still recommend the J. Herbin. Good luck!

Private Reserve's Supershow Blue (or, if you want something a bit lighter, Lake Placid) meets all your requirements (in a wet pen it takes longer to dry, but you can speed things up by diluting with water) except the last one; and I don't think there's a bulletproof ink that meets your colour requirement. Aurora Blue isn't bulletproof and doesn't meet your colour requirement - it has a fairly high purple content.

I like Noodler's Polar Blue. It is bulletproof, and I have not had any problems with it in any of the pens I have used it in (Pelikan M800, Conklin Mark Twain Crescent, Taccia Andante, or Parker 51).

Waterman and Diamine are considered, by Richard Binder, the best inks available. They are true solutions and contain no solids. Waterman Florida Blue is probably the most popular blue ink there is. One of my pens is a fussy writer (but my best when it behaves). This pen writes noticable better with Waterman ink compared to Omas, Pelikan, Quink, and Private Reserve inks. In fact Private Reserve, which is pigmented, clogs it up instantly.

I have not tried, by Richard Binder also recommends mixing Waterman Florida Blue with Waterman Violet to make some nice colors.

Another good one for the requirement is Private Reserve American Blue, which is brighter than Lake Placid Blue.

You can also mix a Noodler's "bulletproof" or "eternal" blue ink (except Britannia's Blue Waves?) with most other blue inks from Noodler's (except the Baystate series) or just about any other brand (except Sailor?).

Yes, I recommend mixing. Actually, I moreso recommend "doping" your favorite nonbulletproof with a bulletproof blue (to about 25% bulletproof). The ink will remain legible after wetting, but will have all the vibrance and most of the flow properties of the nonwaterproof ink.

Also, check out my Glacier Royale mix for some other ideas.
