Full Version: There is no "Barely Black" Agio

I have never seen such a widespread spelling/word error as this one. It appears on most websites I've seen selling it. The Sheaffer Agio comes in a form called "Barley Black", presumably because it has a barley pattern. Surely you've heard of barley? It's an important ingredient of beer, and makes good soup, too.

What would "barely black" even mean? Light black?

Now crossing fingers that I actually got the spelling right every time. unsure.gif

It would be a pattern embossed in the surface of a black pen. Kind of like little grains all neatly layed out.

The Barley Gold Plate has been a Sheaffer standard pattern for some time. Many find it quite attractive.

The misspelling is on the Sheaffer website. The finish is "Barely Black" and has been since it was introduced.

Well, the current Sheaffer site now shows ``Barley Black Finish with Nickel Plate Trim'' when one mouses over the Black / Nickel swatch:

http://www.sheaffer.com/writing/agio/

But that's only in a graphic and searching Sheaffer's site for ``Barley black'' doesn't find anything AFAICT.

A quick search on Google shows both variations in use though, sometimes both on the same web page.

Unfortunately, the site isn't allowing me to edit my review to correct it.

mea culpa.

Very sharp proofreading sas!

FWIW - the Sheaffer website is incorrect. The finish is called "Barely Black." It is NOT Barley Black.

Every catalog, pricelist, and the pen boxes themselves shows the name, "Barely Black."

The finish is not a barleygrain pattern, as on the gold plated barleycorn finish. It's a leather grain enamel, though finer, similar to the Look of Leather Legacy pens.

Well color me barley red. embarrassed_smile.gif As Sheaffer themselves are inconsistent, I don't know how anyone can say definitively what the name is supposed to be. From your evidence, it does seem that "barely" is more likely, although it makes less sense to me.

I think the name might make more sense if listed with other "Fashion Color" names. I know there were many more, but the ones I see on Jim's site currently are:

Serene Blue
Whispering Pink
Simply Yellow
Blushing Brown
Subtle Brown
Tranquil Yellow

"Barely Black" would fit right in, don't you think? biggrin.gif

No, the correct name is "Barely Black." Sheaffer's website is incorrect. There is no inconsistency. It's that simple.
