New guy question...

I bought this from a local shop and I am unsure of the model and how to fill it. The back unscrews like a corkscrew and sometimes it is hard to get it to close back. Thanks

Todd

Does a little metal tube come up out of the feed when you turn the blind cap at the bottom?

I will try and check when I get home. I want to try it out to see how it works. Are there any websites to check on filling old Sheaffer or Parker fountain pens?

Thanks,

Todd

Try this. The reference pages at richardspens.com are pretty splendid, also.

edit-- subject-verb agreement am tricky!

It is a snorkel! if the ink sac inside the metal case with the spring around it is still soft and supple and has no breaks in it, when you unscrew the back end the tube in the nib comes out. Put that in the ink and pull the back end out then push it all the way in. Remove the tube from the ink and screw the back end back into the pen. It is now inked. If it does not fill, the ink sac and/ or the seal on the piston need to be replaced.

You can get an idea if everything inside is working by pulling the rod or piston out then put the pen next to your ear as you push in the rod. If you here a phuss-ing sound, it is probably ready to fill. Replacing the seal and sac anyway is a good idea, though.

Thanks for the info. I wish I had some to show how it is done. I paid $20.00 for it at a local antique store. Was it a good buy should I go back for the one I left behind?

Thanks,

What year was this model?

thanks

I don't know what year it was. Someone else who knows these "newer" Sheaffers will have to tell you that. My guess is between 1952-54

Sovereign, 1952-1959. Even if it needs new sac and seals, it seems in good enough shape that $20 is within reason.

...and it will almost certainly need new seals.

I'd try filling it with water first to see if it will fill. Place only the tube in and not the entire nib section.

Excellent find! I found a Snorkel this weekend too! They are great! You gotta love the mechanics of them.
