Hi everyone,

I am new to FPN, though I have always loved fountain pens. Last week I just got a new Pelikan 405, my first real fountain pen. I am in LOVE! I probably spend as much time staring at it as I do writing with it. This is my first pen with a fine nib, and I am becoming a fan.

I'm sure I will countless hours reading posts and trying to learn what I am doing. I just wanted to say hi to everyone!

Hello!
Reese
Thanks for the warm welcome!

Now that I have to explain it, it seems kind of silly. smile.gif Looks factored heavily in my decision.

I was debating between the Pelikan 400 series and the 600 series. I chatted with my new friends at the Fountain Pen Hospital, and we decided that a 400 would be best forme (I'm only 5'1"). Among the 400's I liked the plain black with silver trim the best.

It wasn't all about the look, though. I know that Pelikans are great pens, and I specifically wanted a piston fill. Based on what I've seen on FPN, this is probably just the first of many fountain pens. I thought this would be a good start. Any suggestions for building my collection? Anything I should be sure to try?

Hi and welcome to FPN!! A Pelikan is always a great way to start!! Lamy 2000 pens are also nice writers and piston fillers. Not as elegant looking as your new Pel but a real workhorse when you don't want to chance damaging your Pelikan.

There is nothing silly about choosing a pen for its looks. I wonder how many much more important decisions (marriage, real estate, etc.) are made based solely on looks. The pen you chose is certainly a beautiful one and I'm sure you will love it as I love all my Pelikans (notice the plural there bunny01.gif bunny01.gif )!

Have you seen the Pelikan Honey? It's also a 400 series and it's a striking pen.

There isn't a huge difference between the 400s and the 600s but once you get to the 800 size, that's where I at least, begin to notice the difference. If you want to see a really cute Pelikan, check out the 320. Now THAT'S a tiny pen but it's just as good a writer as its big brothers!

Of course, I could go on and on about various other brands but then I'd have to be guilty for destroying your budget. (Check out the Yard-o-Led Viceroy Victorian standard. This is one of the most gorgeous pens on the market. It is entirely handmade, solid sterling silver and it writes like a dream. It has enough hallmarks on it to satisfy any skeptic and it is NOT a fortune - depending of course on where you buy it).

Hi and welcome.
Yup, Pelikans are the best way to start (if you ask me). Like an M400, M600 or M215 also. Don't just look at their sizes but also their weights.
A Waterman Charleston is also a good starter FP.
