Am I glad to see a community around fountain pens. I've used them for years. I live in the Boston area, and I've always loved "heavy" fountain pens like a rotring.

I'm thrilled to find the community, as my elder daughter is a writer. She's used a fountain pen she received at 13 every day. For her 16th birthday, she wants an antique typewriter (easy to find) and an antique fountain pen. By antique, she really means history and old vs. valuable. I'm unsure which forum to post those questions around finding and valuing "vintage" pens, so any direction is greatly appreciated.

Hey, how many 16 year olds want an old typewriter and pen for their birthday? I'm happy!

Welcome to FPN. The Writing Instruments forum is probably the best place for you to post general questions about vintage pens. If you have questions about a particular brand, there are quite a few brand specific forums where you can post questions.

Hi and welcome to FPN! My 16 year old has shown some interest and has several modern Fountain pens. I also gave her a Parkette pen. Some really good vintage pens are out there and don't have to be very expensive to obtain. Some suggestions might be a Parker 51 from the 1940's, an Esterbrook or maybe a Sheaffer Balance.

Hello and welcome! I second the Esterbrook.

Third for the Esterbrook.
When I think classic, I think "J."

Welcome to the FPN. I also am an Esterbrook fan but vintage Parkers and Sheaffers are worth looking into also.

They seem to have a solid offering of vintage Sheaffers and Parkers. Mostly what would be classified as "student pens" but some good stuff like the Admiral and Craftsman TD and the "21."

Hi and welcome. If you really love heavy pens then take a look at (and a feel of) the Toledo M900.

It's funny, but for me, I love the heavy pens. That's why I went to the Rotring. Is there another modern pen that has that weight and feel (for me)?
