Hi folks,

I have a lovely Sheaffer vac-fil pen whose model I can't figure out. It has a Triumph nib (so therefore after 1942, I believe). It has a wire cap band. It's a burgundy striated celluloid. The grip section is also burgundy striated. The cap clip, wire band, and trim on the barrel of the pen (screw threads that engage cap) are all gold.

When capped, it looks suspiciously like a burgundy striated Craftsman... but I understand that the Craftsman model only came with an open "33" nib, not a Triumph. Also, this is a vac-fil, not a lever or touchdown model.

I'd greatly appreciate the name of the model an the approximate year. I'm guessing that it's from between 1942 and 1949, given that the nib debuted in 1942 and the vac-fil mechanism was replaced by the Touchdown in 1949.

Thanks!

Richard,

If you go to

http://www.richardspens.com/

And check out the "Reference Info" section. Look in the section on the Sheaffer Craftsman. Richard Binder describes a pen like the one you have described and says it's a Sovereign II.

I have no idea what makes it a Sovereign II as opposed to a Sovereign I, but there you go.

Hope this helps,

Chris

Thanks, Chris!

I also did a google search on "sheaffer sovereign II" and was surprised to receive so few hits. Anybody know if this is a somewhat rare model? I really like it: it fits well in my hand, has a solid heft, and writes nicely. I'm also drawn to the Vac-Fil filling mechanism and the smooth "soft" feel of the celluloid in my hand.
