Does anyone know what the retail price was for this?
I know a fair price is different for each person, but has anyone bought this pen after the fact, and what did it sell for?
I would like to get one, but the prices seem to be kind all over the place...
Thanks and Cheers!

The retail in 2002 for the 4810 was €1,650, and for the 888 was €4,700. But in those days, the UD$ was stronger than, or at least at the same level as, the Euro, so the figure was less in UD$. Currently, I've seen prices to range between US$2,200 and US$3,200 for the 4810. I'm no expert on prices, but in my opinion, no more than UD$2,500 is a fair deal at current market prices. As for the 888 it's around US$6,000.

You could recently get a new one with box and papers online in the whereabouts of $2200. One word of warning though: I have yet to find a Carnegie where the overlay on the barrel aligns with that on the cap. I have seen at least half a dozen in person and have had no such luck. That slight misalignement (30 to 45 degrees or so) is quite irksome and for me unacceptable. I thought they could pay more attention to detail on this kind of pen. You should see how well the Medici patterns align.

Do let me know if you find an aligned Carnegie. It would be interesting to know if it exists.

Probably that a nibmeister would be able to rotate the overlay on the barrel to make ot align to the one on the cap. The guys at FPH have told me no, but I still imagine the opposite is possible.

When I bought my Carnegie, it was the last one in the boutique. At that time, the alignment issue did not come into my mind. But when I started using the pen, I noticed that the alignment of the ovelay was not only off, but that it was also different everytime I capped the pen. So I played around with the pen and discovered that the cap srews into 3 different positions. Must be that the threads are composed of 3 simple threads that interwind together. In one of those positions, the overlay is almost perfectly aligned, off by one degree or even less, which is not noticeable unless you inspect it very closely.

So, RedRob, it is possible that the half a dozen Carnegies you have seen, may actually align better depending on the position the cap is srewed on. It would be interesting if you could examined them again and check.
