A question for you Pelikan mavens. I have a green striated M400. The cap jewel has a green incised pelican logo. no writing on the gold cap band. The celluloid is imprinted "Pelikan M400 Gunther Wagner Germany"

Is this an NN? Does the "Germany" instead of "W Germany" help date it?

thanks!

Hi,

Pictures would help, if it says M400 on it, it isn't a 400NN this is a different model, if it says Germany instead of W Germany suggests post unification, so after 1990. The inscription may mean it is a special edition (but not necessarily rare)they did some I think centenary editions which came in 'vintage style' Gunther Wagner boxes I have a Tortoise M400 like this, but assume mine may be pre 1990 as it still says W Germany on the cap band.

Hopefully some one else maybe of more use.

I'm not aware of any M400 with the M400 imprinted on the barrel. I, too, would like to see an image.

I apologize for the poor photography, but here's what I could shoot. Also, a correction. It says "Pelikan 400" not "Pelikan M400" The imprint is at the edge of the green celluloid, just below the black end piece.

Mine has the 400 (not M400) print out on the barrel as well as at the cap band. The barrel print out is "Pelikan 400 Gunther Wagner Germany". While the cap band stated "Pelikan 400 Pelikan 400 Pelikan 400". I think yours is a 50s era 400 series model. My pen is not a NN nor N model but just 400 (green striated) of an old era.

I have a 400NN brown tortoise with the inscription of "Pelikan 400 - Germany" at the cap band but without any mark at the barrel.

Will try to post pic if I manage to get a close up.

Hello all,

the fountain pen at your pictures is a Pelikan model 400 produced from 1950 until 1956.
Your pen should be produced before 1954 due to the engraving at the barrel
near by the filling knob. After 1954 all pens had their engraving at the deco ring
from the cap with "Pelikan 400".

There are some pens in the transition period with engravings at the barrel and
the cap ring.

Best regards
Werner

Thank you, Werner. I had narrowed it down based on previous posts to an early 50s 400, but your note about the engraving on the barrel dating it as pre-1954 was completely new to me. As a pre-54 myself, it just makes the pen that much more simpatico...

I most certainly do, Werner.
It's a wealth of information.

I wish there were other websites on other brands, just like it.
