Full Version: Pelikan nib with two breather holes

Some time back I saw two examples of a Pelikan nib two breather holes. The nibs were vintage (1950-60 - I guess) - one belongs to a friend - his grandfather actually - and the other was bought on ebay and gifted to me which I tragically lost sometime last summer. They were 14 K and had the letters DEF written where the nib width is usually found. The two breather holes are aligned one below the other and the tines are cut only upto the first hole nearest to the point. I have tried to search the internet and the FPN for info about this nib but I did not find any yet. Can anyone tell me more about these nibs? I am curious.

It's a manifold nib and is very stiff for making carbon copies etc. Here's a picture of on from Werner Rüttinger's site.

I have one in a dark blue Pelikan 140 as you can see in this topic:

As Martin mentions its a stiff nib unlike the other (red) pelikan 140 shown. This one has an OM nib with a bit of flex. Both are very nice writers by the way.

Wow that was fast !! Thanks Martin and GeeTee. Yes the nib looked exactly as in the picture. It was kind of stiff. Do they make these nibs anymore? I guess not - they make ballpens and gelpens and who uses carbon copies anyway!!

I find that most nibs are stiff these days, but maybe not as stiff as the D nibs. Older nibs seem to have a bit of flex, i wish modern nibs had that too...but its all a matter of taste.

True. I have a Pelikan M800 with a very smooth M nib which is however rather stiff. I guess nowadays they use a stiffer alloy and I agree with you that it somehow takes away most of the fun of using a fountain pen!! I am still curious to know when did Pelikan stop making the D nibs?

The truly amazing nib master John Mottishaw converts nibs to have two breather holes one above the other. He cuts the slit to the top one.
This produces extra flex.

I have one of his 'two eyed' nibs on a M1000
I like it very much
