Are there any stores here in the Philippines that offer Pelikans and Pilots (the Vanishing Point)? I would like to try them out. And how about other brands like Sheaffer, Montblanc, etc.?
Help me out my fellow countrymen. Thanks!

There is a Pilot distributor in my country. But I dont know about Philippines. I suggest you e-mail the Pilot Malaysia to ask. Maybe they can help. You can contact them in this website: www.pilotpen.com.my

Some Rustan's branches offer Mont Blanc.
There's an Aurora dealer in NBS Glorrieta.
Luis Store in Escolta has a lot of fountain pens available.
Pelikans and Pilot VPs are a no-go.

Sad to know there aren't
Are Auroras good? And what does Luis Store offer? An assortment, i presume?

I've never tried an Aurora, and the ones they sell are expensive. I haven't actually seen the store, but I was told of it by a friend. Luis Store, I haven't been to, but they offer an assortment at an expensive price as well. 51s are P25k. Woohoo!

Auroras are good pens, probably as good as Pelikans. Their price spectrum range from starters to way up there. Luis Store carries modern Sheaffers and Parkers and the occasional Pilot and Pelikan. They also offer pen repair services.

Oh, I see. Problem is I don't know where Escolta is (more so the store), and everyone I ask ends up saying "I don't know either". People.

hi, kerotan, welcome to FPN. by that remark, i suppose you mean that filipinos (especially young filipinos) these days don't know where things and places are, anymore, beyond the big shopping malls. this annoys and saddens me deeply as well, and i often urge my students to take a jeep or a bus (not a car) into the heart of manila (quiapo, ongpin, and sta. cruz, where you'll find luis store) and to reacquaint themselves with their own city and country. it's sad that we sometimes know corners of manhattan better than manila, because all we ever go to is greenhills and glorietta

Hello sir "penmanila"! (or Prof. Dalisay) From what I heard, you are a professor in UP (I'm a student there

) Yes, by that I mean the Filipinos these days. Forgive me for I, too, am guilty. Well, maybe because I live in the province. From what you said, I think I'll explore the city, though I'll easily get lost!

sometimes, getting lost isn't such a bad thing

i've made wonderful discoveries off the beaten track. go to sta. cruz and escolta with a friend so you'll feel safer. it'll be a great adventure for one morning or afternoon. like the epic heroes of old, you have to take risks to find worthwhile treasures. and being a UP student means (at least to this UP grad) that you're prepared to take risks in life.

It has now come to this? An inhabitant of practically the same city not knowing where Escolta is? The longest street in the universe because is started at the Puerto del Sol and ended in La Estrella del Norte and between Botica Boie, Oceanic, Bookmark, etc. that carried the best brands of fountain pens.

let's not be too hard on kerotan

he's young, and young pinoys nowadays have very little reason to go to escolta, except when teachers like me force them to. but soloworx is right--best attitude is to just keep a bright, open mind, and first demand things of yourself before you expect them of others, like knowing where escolta is. it's an issue that can be happily resolved with P100 in your pocket and a bus ride (into smoky territory, yes, but hey, it's home).

hi, ariessa, why don't you join our little (but growing!) group on FPN-philippines? we're meeting next wednesday for lunch in italianni's on bonifacio high street, and one of our members is bringing a batch of very affordable pens, both vintage and new. we're also bringing loads of other really droolworthy pens

you can find out more about us here:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/fpn-p/by the way, don't be scared of ordering from melpens. i got my M1000 from them and sent them my card details. the pen got here in 18 hours by fedex, believe it or not, for just $16 shipping

no taxes, no duties, no hassles.

really sir? ahhh.. i'm just a kid with no knowledge but an eye for anything pretty. hahahahah. but i think i'll still join the group
uhmmm could i ask an advice?
Somebody is selling an Aurora Optima for 200USD only i only saved 3k this month(since i was originally aiming for a pelikan), and i'm looking forward for another 3 next month(more like within the next week). but i think i can ask a loan from my mom. (some moms are strict in giving loans and collecting debts due)... but i'm not sure if it'll be a "good buy". (hard to trust sellers selling their items at such low cost). My friend sometimes allow me to use her FP. but i rarely do. so i'm pratically a dummy in this department i think.

if you're buying an aurora for your first FP, you might want to check out the auroras in national book store glorietta in makati (and only in that branch). they're still 50% off, i think, and i'm sure that with your P3,000 you'll find something to your liking there. nothing like trying out the pen in your hand and how it writes. otherwise, spend it on the pelikan M215 from melpens--that'll be a great first pen, too. or you can join us on wednesday and, with that same budget, buy a used but great vintage pen on the spot from butch palma (there'll be two ladies with us--jenny alcasid and leigh reyes, both FPN members). welcome aboard!

i went to glorietta sir 2 weeks ago, since i am serious in buying a good FP. i found the service not to my liking, so i tucked my money away and left that place...
i heard of Parker 51, is it up for sale? i heard XF nibs of Parker 51s are better than whats on the market nowadays. recently, there seems to be influx of pens up on sale due to the economic thingie. i saw several Parker 51 items. i love its simplicity, and the nib... but i'm worried about the ink capacity. anyway, i'm highly considering the possibility of going to that gathering. but i have to ask for directions since i live here in las pinas city. if i'm not mistaken a friend of mine used to live near that area
thank you for your welcome sir

I have not met Leigh in person but she helped me a lot in choosing a flexible current production fountain pen. I ended up with a Pilot Custom 742 with her help.
Invaluable suggestion from Penmanila that is. Start with vintage pen, I could have saved a lot of money if that’s how I started. Found out much later that it was vintage Pelikans that my hands and heart were hankering for. Btw, I had a glimpse once of Leigh’s enviable Pelikan collection.

When it comes to vintage, Luis Store's probably the only place to go, asides from other local pen enthusiasts. I've plotted a route out to commute there, but I live in San Juan, so results will most obviously vary. It's a good place, but you'll want to save up some before heading there - most pens will cost a small fortune (relatively, not comparatively).
NBS's and other places keep having sales on FP's too, so you might wanna take a look there if you have a tight budget. If you're insistent on Pelikans though, you'll have to either get them online or through other FP collectors.

To get to Luis Store from Quezon City, I took the LRT2, got off at Recto station and walked along Avenida to Isetann (Carriedo, I think). I then turned left to the Sta. Cruz church and crossed the road to Escolta. I think it took me 10-15 minutes to get to Luis Store from the Recto station. If you're not sure about walking along Avenida then you can transfer to the LRT1 D. Jose station from the LRT2 station and get off at the Carriedo station. From there it'll be a shorter walk to the church and to Luis Store.
Oh and please don't bring anything valuable and keep your phone hidden at all times especially when you're walking along Recto and Avenida. Bring a friend. Enjoy the adventure like I did last summer:)
