I just won this pen on Ebay:

Its a glod filled Wahl Pen, and I must confess is the first of this kind I've ever seen. I have seen woodgrain, BHR and celluloid pens like this, but never a metal one.

Hi mandragoru,

Nice pen! Never seen one with a roller clip before, though, so I will send Syd (our ever-so-knowledgeable Wahl-Eversharp forum moderator) a PM (personal message) to see if he's seen one like that before.

Syd posted a nice little history of the Wahl All Metal pens (as they are known) here:

(see part 2 of his long post)

In 1921 and 1922 (the year the pen in the photo was made, any of the 300 series models were available with choice of ring-top or side clip. In the 1921 and 1922 catalogs Model 302B is shown with the side clip. They are not often seen, as there far many more without the clip, or with the spoon clip but the roller clip was definitely available. It was available on this series as mentioned (it is a small pen and had a number 2 nib and was available as a lever fill or an eye-dropper. You can tell the 1921 and 22 pens by the beveled cap lip.

I have two Gold Filled Wahls with #2 nibs and they are yumilicious (technical term) to write with. It's a nice flexy nib. Your pens looks so beautiful. Enjoy! thumbup.gif

Metal Wahls make for nice collecting. The clip on yours might be replacement, though not a huge deal, even if so.

Here are some more, to whet the apetite wink.gif

Nope, not a replacement clip...see the post 3 above this one. The pen is a correct pen.

There sure is, David - I've never seen (in my admittedly short time collecting) any thing like those last three ring-top pens! Is that enamel? They are fantastic! Were their larger pens coloured that way?

Thanks Syd for the informed answers.
And David - WOOOW. Nice pictures of beautiful pens. I wish I have them in my collection.

Ditto!

Those pens are gems! The three colored pens were only made in the ring top and matching pencil sizes. They are all from 1928 + or- 6 months and represent the last Hoorah for Wahl-Eversharps attempt to provide variety while not going all the way over to plastic completely. The pens were called "Tinted" but yes, they are coated in a semi transparent enamel. They were Gold Filled over Silver under the enamel and the enamel and sometimes the the gold filling was cut through to the silver for the bright metal highlights. The catalog of 1928 states that they came in "blue-green and "rose- pink" enamel in a combination of straight and ripple patterning. Numbering of these pens is available. If you who want to go that far, drop me a line. I have some of these like one of the ones here that are all covered in the transparent enamel with no highlights cut through, and the colors I have seen vary somewhat. I have some in what is definitely rose-pink and yet others in this bright orange color as above, but the bright orange color is not catalogued as far as I have looked.
