Okay I understand about limited editions, but I have a very hard time understanding why a transparent blue plastic pen is worth over $1000... is it simply that it's a hard to find limited edition? It's pretty, but not $1000 worth of pretty, at least not to me. I just don't get it.
(I've been looking at it at Fountain Pen Hospital, but I can't seem to get a link to the image)

A good question. I try to justify that crazy price...
In 1993 only few limited edition were produced. It's the start of the "limited edition" collections era.
The Blue Ocean was one of the first and most succesfull.

Actually the Blue Ocean is of a lighter shade of blue so it is easier to see the level of ink in the reservoir. The end of the pen where you twist to lower the piston, there are 2 gold rings (vs 1) and on the end of it is a gold disk with a star on it. The top of the cap is also nicer.
Another of the features is the packaging. The case the pen comes in is a thick, heavy, white plastic with a groove cut into it to fit the pen that simulates marble.
All great and elegant looking, but very pricey.

$1000? I seem to remember the Blue Ocean was changing hands for $600-700 not so very long ago. Who says fountain pens don't appreciate in value?

Be sure the "Blue Ocean" is numbered on the cap nut.
There was a later release, the "Blue Demonstrator" that was not numbered.

It's just a rare pen produced in a limited quantity by a well known pen company.

Value and Price are not the same thing and not necessarily related.

Hi Petra:
In this specific case, as almost always, the price is fixed where converge a person willing to pay Us$1,000 and a person willing to sell at that price.
