Dear all,
Let me introduce myself properly. I have written on and off with fountain pens. Two years ago I got a simple Waterman fountain pen as a present when leaving my old job. I had been writing with it for about a year when visiting a pen store in Portland, OR with a friend. He bought a Pelikan M805 in the end and I of course also tried out the different pens in the store. I also noticed how much better these pens were compared to my old pen.
Getting home to the Netherlands, I bought a Pelikan M1000. It wrote beautifully when I tried it in the store. However, getting home it would not start writing. After dipping it in some ink it starting writing fine. But every time, after 10 minutes in my shirt pocket, it would not start. The store first replaced the nib. That did not help. Then it replaced the whole pen with a totally different one. Again the same problem. The store basically had no alternative but to take the pen back.
I then bought a MontBlanc Writer's Edition William Faulkner as a replacement. That one has served me for a year. However, it does skip quite a few times and after writing for a while it might stop working and if I turn the piston knob a bit one or more air bubbles come out and after that it works again. But it is a bit frustrating.
This year I came back to Portland for a visit and I tried a S.T. Dupont Orheo Large fountain pen. It wrote incredibly smooth so I could not resist buying it. It never skips and I never have problems with air bubbles but it obviously uses a converter instead of a piston. My friend was telling me how his Pelikan M805 had served him well for a year so I could not resist (again) to buy a Pelikan M800 after I got home. This Pelikan works beautifully and has never skipped. However, I still think my Dupont is better made. It is really flawless in its finishing. I also appreciate that the Dupont is a bit heavier and feels more solid. Then I went overboard and ordered a Sailor Kanreki XF via ebay and at this moment I am very anxiously awaiting its arrival. Clearly I am getting a bit of an addict and hence I started to read this forum.
We'll see where this will end.
Anton
