Just wondering what you folks think of as the quintessential Pelikan. I jumped on an M400 because of a good price and I wanted to try the famed Pelikan nib. Love the pen (in blue) and the nib. Wondering (buyer's remorse sort of) if I should have held out for a 600 or an 800.
I use my pens, a lot. Any thoughts here?

Its all preference. I find that the M600 is perfect for me. I may try an M800 just to see if I like the bigger pen. If you can, head to a pen shop and hold several of the pens. Thats the only way you are going to find out if you like the size.

FWIW.........
I find the Pelikan Future more comfortable over the long haul than the M200, M600, or Pelikano............
YMMV
p.s. as the M800 is heavier and bulkier I doubt I would find it comfortable for extended writing............

Started out with a M400 and was happy with the size and balance until my first M800. Now have 3 M800's inked and the M400 sits in the desk drawer.

I first had a M400, and like it, but wanted something larger and heavier. I purchased a Pelikan M800 Wall Street Limited edition and like it far better cause it's bigger and heavier. I no longer use the M400 very much and will probably sell the ones that I have. But as everybody has said, it's all personal. The 800 while biiger than the 400 or 600 is not actually as big as some of the Bexleys, Danitrio, and other pens. Many Pelikan lover almost seem to fear getting an 800, let alone a 1000 cause they think they are gigantic. The 800 is my cup of tea.

I have a "binderized" M600 a fantastic pen, but in the pen store I tried the m1000. Its perfection.

Well, it is very much a matter of personal preference... The M800 is significantly larger and more than twice the weight of the M400. The M600 is larger, but not much heavier.
Mr Binder's site has a size chart (at the bottom of the Pelikan sale page), it might be a good idea to at least check that out.

How about the M1000?
Is the first on my wishlist (my preferred pen is still the 149, followed by the Duofold Centennial and the Man 100 so may be a bit biased toward big pens...).

I got the Pelikan M1000 recently and haven't set it down since! If you like large pens, it's wonderful - very solid and reliable with a beautiful responsive nib.

Daily use.....I had been addicted to my M805 (blue), however since obtaining my M1000 black and gold it has been my instrument of choice. 1000's are an amazing piece, the nib is unreal great feel, flow and a pleasure to use.
I would love an M1000 in black with Rhodium trim if ever such a piece is produced.
One cannot go wrong with the M800's- such a balanced pen, I write un posted and it still has a wonderful poised feel.

It seemed to me in terms of balance the 800 unposted and the 600 posted were very similar.
Good lord, I can't imagine writing with the 1000 for long stretches of time. The nib is the size of a fist!

Hi,
I have M200s, M400s a couple of M600s (OS &NS) and an M800, whilst I find all comfortable to write with, the NS M600 is probably the best all rounder for most people.

Going strictly according to your criteria of 'epitome' and 'quintessential', it has to be the M800. Although personally, I prefer the M805.

I'm with Col- to me, it seems like you want us to tell you one thing: M800. For me, that size of a pen is way too big to be an always with you "daily use writer." To me, that would be an M400, unless you carry around a briefcase and don't prefer having your pen always on the ready on your person. Not to say you can't clip on a large pen, but it just doesn't feel right IMHO.

I have small hands, have used both the 400 and 600. Both are great, but I prefer the 600 for 2 reasons: 1) larger ink capacity, especially nice with a wet medium or wider nib; 2) the matching ballpoint or pencil for the 400 have sort of cheap-looking push button on top whereas the 600 (and higher series) have more elegant hidden twist mechanisms. If you are left-handed "hooker" like me, you must try the OM (oblique medium) nib. Absolutely superb.

I have the M250, M400, M800, and M1000. The one I carry most often for daily use is the M800.

I have 200-old style with the more domed cap, M400, M800 and M1050.
I find I get the most use out of the latter two, and always write with the caps posted-even the vermeil cap on the M1050. The latter is one of my overall favourite pens, having a factory OB nib. All seem perfectly comfortable in my hands-there again i have relatively large hands.

What should matter isn't what someone else thinks is "quintessential" but what works best for you; and what size suits you depends on how big your hands are, whether you use a pen with the cap posted, how much weight you want, etc. But for me, the nib is more important than how big the pen is; and as far as I'm concerned, Pelikan's best nibs by far were made in the 1950s and earlier (but then I like flex and obliques and stubs that are cut to give considerable line variation). At that point, their biggest pen was the 400NN (a tiny bit longer than a 400), i.e., small by the standards of some of their modern pens, but they don't seem small to me when I post the cap. For me, the quintessential Pelikan would be a toss-up between a 100 or 100N, a 140 and a 400/400NN (I also think they look nicer than their modern counterparts, but that's another matter...).

I recently tried a 200 and, granted my only comparison was my 33 year old 120, it seemed very light to me. I have small hands and generally like a lighter weight pen for everyday - but if I ever try another Pelikan I will go for a 400 or 600 -- though I have never held either - so I probably have no idea what the heck I am talking about! One thing I will do though if I get another is to get a Binder-ized stub!

I have small hands, so I like the 400. Another favorite is a 140 that's nearly perfection after Richard Binder smoothed the nib.

Joe, as usual I'll have to disappoint:
If I could have only one single Pelikan, it might be an M600 (due to the size which is after all what you're looking at today).
But I already do favour my M800 because it is a bit bigger and my M215 because it is a bit smaller.
And... I'm going to get next a Toledo 900 because it is the heaviest... and... an M320 because it is the tiniest (just right for my T-shirt poocket).

Me too. It is a question of personal preference and I prefer the size of the 400. Hence I have several 400s, mainly vintage.
