Dear all,

This is my very first post on FPN. I have been reading about the Indian pens for a while, and working for a newspaper here in Hyderabad, India gave me an opportunity to highlight FPs and shops dealing with FPs. Though I have a negligible collection, with a few Indian Parkers, a Sheaffer BP, an English Parker Duette BP among others, I dropped in to Deccan Pen Stores, here at Hyderabad the other day and got me a "baby" Onyx, all ebonite, with a small SS nib which is slowly warming up to my handwriting.

Check out the snap.

Also, do give the article a read here:

Welcome to FPN! Looks like a Baby Ambassador pen. Similar nib and the same brushed finish.

Dear Jai,

Nice meeting you here. The pen bug bit me again a few days back after seeing my editor's collection of FPs. I began reading up a bit and realised that a lot of Hyderabadis have no idea about Deccan Pens. Moreover, disturbingly enough, most kids nowadays are dissuaded from using FPs in school. Ergo, I had to write the piece. Thanks for your feedback. I will definitely consider the Advocate. I saw a glossy beautiful model the other day, and I'm thinking of getting it as soon as my salary comes down.

OH NOES! More cute pens! It looks like the size of the Nakaya Piccolo or a Sheaffer Tucky.

Note to self: Available on-line soon.

Hey thanks ethernautrix! I know, its darned cute. Barely 5 inches with the cap on, yet fits my hand snugly, and its warmer than plastic. the hand finished matte finish is just awesome! Still can't get over it. And for 150 rupees (<US$ 4), its a good deal, for a handmade pen.

Ah sweet! Will you let us know when it's available. (Seriously, 4 US Dollars? Do they know what the dollar is worth? -rimshot.) (No, really. Four?! Get two, they're small!)

Yeah, a heads-up would be appreciated. Thanks!

A wee update on the Onyx, The nib seemed a little scratchy, so I took the pen to Deccan Pens, at Ameerpet, and met the affable Haleem Siddiqui, younger brother of Saleem Siddiqui, who presently is in charge of the Ameerpet branch. He fiddled with the nib for a bit and now it writes like a charm. The Ameerpet shop is much bigger than the main branch at Abids, what attracted my attention were a couple of old posters from the 40's and 50's that adorned the walls of the shop- old Mont Blanc posters in Art Deco style, a vintage pre-WWII Pelikan advert, an old enlargement of the original Deccan Pens store among others.

Currently on the prowl for a Lamy Safari and a Pelikano. Fingers crossed. blush.gif

Come to Bombay, wonderful prices if you know the shops!

True, though a stint at B'Bay is unlikely anytime. Thanks for the heads up anyway.

Cheers

Rahul

PS: Love the fact that a handful of guys like you and Jai are uncovering a wealth of Indian FPs. Keep up the good work!
