I did some digging on this pen and made a novelty bid on it. I wasn't planning to pay more than $40 from a seller who lived in Thailand, had no feedback and no real detail on the pen.

I got a bit curious to try and identify what pen it is. The closest I can find is the Giacomo Leopardi limited edition in vermeil. Trouble is, the vermeil edition is supposed to have dark blue celluloid trim whereas the pen on auction has green. Any thoughts? Is it just discoloration of the celluloid or is someone bidding on a very costly wannabe?

First off I have to state that I am very cynical when I look at anything on fleaBay these days. I am more so when I see the seller is from Thailand. So, "No," I would not have bid on the pen.

The next red flag to me is when any seller calls anything made by Visconti "vintage." Secondly, "Firenza" is where the pens are made. I seriously doubt this model is called "Firenza." To me it looks like a Leopardi LE from 1997, just as you said. So, 1997 is vintage?! The celluloid in the Leopardi photos I have seen looks like the blue material used in the Anniversary Voyager LE. The pen for sale did appear to have a very different greenish material. That green material also did not appear even close to the green Anniversary Voyager I have.

All told, this auction does not look promising to me. I think you are just as happy that you went with your instincts.

The gold Leopardi had 3 different celluloid colours: blue, red and green, which could be exchanged in the same pen:

Interestingly enough, a day or two after the auction ended, I received a message from eBay saying they had removed this listing and cancelled my bid on it due to possible fraud.
