My wife is an elementary school teacher who receives a newsletter about teacher-stuff regularly. She brought this to my attention and I thought some of you might be interested. If you follow

It is amazing how the brain works. So many things in one area improve another. Music is another example. Studies show that those who study music have improved in other areas of academia.

Well, not being able to see the actual research - I will comment that what is presented of the research shows a correspondence between writing speed and later essay skill, but does not mention cursive. The cursive reference is in the summary by the newsletter - it would be interesting to see if it was actually from the research, or based on the summarizers assumption that cursive = faster, which is not necessarily so (especially with traditional American roundhand-derived cursive).
