I recently got a Wahl Gold Seal Personel Point on Fleabay. I paid a bit more than I intended but I wanted it pretty badly. Tonights question is : Does Wahl have a classification system similar to Parker, ie, Duofold Senior and Duofold Junior?
Looking at the preeminent Wahl site, Pensbury Manor, I found 3 similar pens a #6404SC which apprears to be just short of 5" capped. A 8604SC which looks in the neighborhood of 5 1/4" capped. Neither of these are marked Junior for the former or Standard for the latter. However, also shown is a 8604C at slightly over 5 1/2" capped pen noted as Oversized. The seller measures my pen at 5 1/8" capped. So I'm assuming this is probably the middle of the 3 pens listed. Is this the standard sized Gold Seal? Would mine be an 8604SC based on it's height? Is there any other way I can finalize my guesstimate of which Wahl I have? Experts, knowledgable amateurs, help me out please. Thanks, Jim

Don't know the answer but am looking forward to hearing from the experts. My two personal points are right at 5 1/4". What color did you buy? So far I have found a lapis and black and pearl.

Perry:
That lapis sounds beautiful. Is this a tulip clip like on Dr. I's site? Mine is a Black and Pearl one. Don't know why but I'm liking that colour a lot lately. Got a couple of Moores, a ring top and a Regular Flat top in that and a Sub Endura in same.

Syd - Wahlnut:

You never cease to amaze us. Such a neat collection, such a knowledge of Wahl's pens, yet such a humility. Syd, you deserve a song:

Syd, Syd, what you ever did,
To this topic on pens with lid,
Syd, Syd, you are great,
Wahl's pens, you never hate!
Syd, Syd, you are a joy,
Wahl's pens are just your toy!
Syd, Syd sitting in our mid,
Walh's pens are for you to bid!
Syd, Syd, what you ever did
To this topic on pens with lid!.

Some Wahl Flat Top sizes. Images mostly from my useful (i hope) sold pens archive.

Girths are OS, Standard, Slender. OS of one length, Standard of two lengths (with appropriate clips) and Slender perhaps one length.

OS- the big honker.

Long Standard (side clip)

Short Standard (military clip)

Another Short Standard

Another Short Standard (military clip)

Non-GS but perhaps more highly sought Short Standard Tulip Clip (the largest Tulip, i believe)

I have seen the fat short standard as ringtop too, but uncommon that way. Not sure if catalogued as ringtop or not. I have one sitting around but not photo'd yet.

Next we have Slender, which mostly are short ringtops and not GS.

RCHR

Lapis

Rosewood plastic

These also are found Tulip clip, though my images of such are not handy, sorry.

Pretty sure we have (heck i might own one) long slender non GS pens too

David i:
Thank you Dr. I. I've either got the long Standard or the short standard. Still waiting for it to arrive in the mail. Seller isn't as fast to ship out as you have been with my previous purchases. Are your photos actual size? IE, can I hold my pen up to screen and say oh yeah, heres a match? Thanks, Jim

Actual size on monitor is about impossible as different monitors are different sizes and resolutions. The sizes are to relative scale- one pic compared to another has proportional resolution.

From David I's pictures mine are both long standards with side clips but one clip may be a replacement because it is as long as the OS clips.

All of my other black and pearls are Parker Duofolds.

Dr. I and Perry:
Sounds like mine is a long standard. My sellere reported length is close to Perry's. Thanks for the info. I'd forgotten about the image size changing with big vs small monitors, duh. Thanks, Jim

There is a way if you use pdf ... I have to produce accurate drawings to scale before sending & use PDF Creator which is the only program I found that allows accurate scaling

Pdf Creator is free see http://sourceforge.net/projects/pdfcreator/

You still have to make the photo scale accurately at 1:1 ratio (You can use Word to do this) but once done you can print to pdf

Very easy to use

* Edit Doh ... just realised if you are using & saving in Word then maybe you can also send that Word file

Clip length varied, iirc, with year of issue.

Sure, we just get caught up sometimes in the pen stuff more than the literature. At least you are not a poetaster wink.gif

But, i always though of Syd as more of a comic character than an object of poetry.

I well enjoyed reading "Wizard of Syd" by Hart and Parker.

Wahlnut
Thought I had made a reply thanks comment about the Poetry, but as I look back I did not. So, THANKS Brahmam for the Syd, Syd with a Lid tribute. I am not sure that I am worthy of all that Hyperbole. Doing what I like to do, amassing some body of information in one place and sharing it through the forum seems not to deserve such accolades, but Thanks. It does take some doing to stay Equi-poised when dealing with some of the things one encounters in what otherwise would be a Vacuum of shared information, but that is just my Personal Point of view. Nonetheless, it sure makes me feel good to know that whatever or however I do what I do, it has made one so pleased. cloud9.gif
--------------
As for you Dr. I, Of all the backhanded compliments I have ever received, I can definitely say that yours is the most recent. blink.gif Just so you can keep it straight, Syd is the real person and The Wahlnut is the comic character soon to be seen in a upcoming Marvel Mystery feed.

Syd and The Wahlnut together in one place for the moment
