I was looking at getting a few of the 1 or 2 oz Nalgene bottles for "travel ink wells". Are these the ones most people are using (1 and 2 oz "straight side jars")?

I also see that the have the flip top vials but they don't SEEM like they could be near as leakproof as the screw top "jars". Can anyone comment from personal use on the flip top vials?

Which one's would be better for ink, the clear lexan ones of the more flexible translucent ones? Also if anyone has both the 1 oz and 2 oz the dimensions of each would be nice as I can't seem to find that on the Nalgene site or anywhere else.

The very small Nalgene bottles seem to be called "straight side jars" (the 1 and 2 oz ones) BUT the Nalgene
site says "not reccomended for liquids" are these DEFINATELY "drip/leak proof".

Thank you,

I think what you want is here: http://www.nalgene-outdoor.com/store/detail.aspx?ID=92

Nalgene also makes containers for laboratory use that are intended for liquid storage. However, the travel kit in the link above looks more practical to me.

N.B. Use the bottles in the kit for ink; they are guaranteed leak-proof. The jars are not recommended as secure enough for thin liquids like ink. Read the fine print.

Available online and in-store at the Container Store. . .

The Nalgene travel bottle i use is cylindrical with a blue screw top cap, marked 30 ml 1 oz, and measures 6 x 3 cm.
It's deep enough for any nib and is leakproof. Carried it in my rucksack on a recent mountain trek with no problems.
Bought it at Eastern Mountain Sports years ago.

I use the straight-sided PP 1 oz and 2 oz jars and find them extremely reliable. Never had a spill and they resist staining very well. I've used them to ship to Canada, and throughout the US. Originally they were called "leak-proof" but I suppose perfection can't be guaranteed. I don't care for the bottles because they make filling very awkward for me. But they seem to be equally reliable just not as strong. IOW, the bottle sides can flex, the jars are rock solid.

these are the ones I use: (and their 2 oz sibs)

re: PC v. PP, both are durable and the PP *jars* are not flexible. I would trust the PP jars more than the Lexan in terms of sealing though. Just because it has a "softer" feel to it and I would think that the surfaces would come together more securely than the brittle surface of the Lexan. No proof of that though.

p.s. I have had up to 30 inks stored in these jars and am very careless with them, often literally tossing them in the back of my cabinet. Never had a leak, break, etc.

Hi,

Lexan is a nearly unbreakable material. So is PP if made properly. Either should be a good choice.

Thank everyone for their info.

In the mean time, I rounded up some additional information myself.

The Campmor website has the dimensions of all the Nalgene bottles if you need to know that.

Re; the difference in "leakproofness" between the jars and bottles. On the Nalgene site they explain
that. They have a pretty high standard of "leakproof". They say you can turn the jars upside down
and they won't leak. The bottles they put liquid into THEN PRESSURIZE them, then check for leaks.
So, one might assume the bottles might take more rugged conditions/use and still be leakproof.

KCat, FYI on the Nalgene website, under "bottles" on page 7 or 8 they have the widemouth polyethylene
1-2 oz bottles, the 1 oz is 2 3/8"H x 1 1/4"W so should be just as easy to load and fill from as your
jars.
