I really want one more bottle of ink, and I would love a deep green. I really really REALLY like PR Sherwood, but I hear it is very smeary even when dry. Is there anything close to it that doesn't smear so bad when dry?

Hi Chupie,
I like very much Noodler's Marine Green. It is plain dark green, with nice hues and no visible trace of blue (differently from Forest Green, for instance). It is not the fastest drying ink, but also not an issue. No smearing, in my experience, once dry.

I was trying to find a nice sample of that (the ink charts don't show it very well) to see how it is. I just love how vibrant the Sherwood is, but if it is as smeary as said, I guess I just have to forget that.

I find the samples on
The Inked Nib very accurate. I am sure that if you ask Natalie (from the same site) she will send you true "ink on paper" samples. Just be sure to ask her to use plain white paper instead of her lovely cream cards, in order to have an accurate idea of the color. My experiences with her have always been excellent.

chupie, have you seen J Herbin's "Lierre Sauvage"? I loved "Sherwood" too, but had to forsake it because of the drying issues. Since I've found "LS", I've been using it for two years and just love it, especially for holiday correspondence. It's a nice dark ivy green which makes this gardener smile every time I use it. AND it dries quickly!

You may like it too.

I second Alejandro's vote for Green Marine. Don't have it myself, but I've received snail correspondence written with it, and I like the color very much.
Another nice green is Swishmix Lakeshore Spruce (sold only by Swisher). I'd describe it as a medium to darkish green (depending on the nib used), very forest-y, with no hint of blue. It's a quick-drying ink, so feathering may be an issue on some cheaper papers.

Well, I have just ordered Green Marine and Cayenne. So, here we go! It does look close to the Sherwood. Man, this ink stuff is addictive.

Agree with Dorothy on this one - very nice green and like most J. Herbin inks seems to have a quick drying time. It's one of the few JH inks that is not "washed out."
it's still not Penman Emerald but...
