Hey All,

I have a P51 with a cap that doesn't seem to fit properly. It's wearing a scratch-line into the middle of the section about 3/4 inch below the clutch ring. It's the cap that came with the pen, and the 51 came from a reputable seller. Is there anyway I can fix this?

Thanks,
Ryan
Gerry
That would be about where the inner cap is Ryan. It does seem to mark the section on mine a little too, although I hadn't actually noticed it before.

The damage shouldn't be serious unless the inner cap has a rough sharp edge to it - maybe even some grit embedded perhaps. I say 'shouldn't' since the inner cap should be softer than the section material.

To help the situation, clean the inner cap thoroughly, paying particular attention to the inner edge. You might consider trying to relieve the inner edge by lightly sanding or burnishing. I wouldn't suggest radical changes to the shape, since the seal of the inner cap to the section may be useful in preventing the nib from drying out.

I note though that in my 51 the cap isn't airtight on its own, so the seal may not be that critical.

As I said, remove the sharpest part of the inner edge, polish the section, and see if that cures the marking.

Thanks for the info, Gerry. I'll try softening the edge of the inner cap. On that note, is there a way to remove the inner cap?
Gerry
Yes, but you're not gonna like the answer. <_<

A number of dealers sell a variety of 'Inner Cap Pullers' with costs ranging from $120.00 to $250.00.

Pendemonium, Tryphon and Woodbin, to name a few, carry them.

There are more basic methods that might be tried, but these may damage the inner surface of the cap more than the tools would.

Cheers,

Gerry
