Springing off the thread about the traveling journal, who would be interested in participating in FPN's Grand Snail Collection™ ?

The basic scheme would be for anyone who wishes to send a snail to the Grand Snail Collector™. The letters and envelopes would them be scanned and concatenated into a single pdf file--a.k.a. The Grand FPN Snail Collection--that would be made available for download and regularly updated. First volume could be free inspiration, and following ones could be based on themes.

Alejandro seemed ready to assume the title of Grand Collector. Who else is in ?

Denis.

This sounds cool (actually, both ideas sound cool). I'm interested.

UAU! What a position! I won't be able to sleep tonight!

Yes, I'll be happy to receive snails and scan them. Besides making a PDF, I will make a Web page with them.

My address is

Alejandro C. Frery
R. Hélio Pradines, 359 Apto. 801
Ponta Verde
57035-220 Maceió, AL - Brazil

I will start the proyect by sending me a letter. People already think I am nuts, so why not giving a good reason for the gossip eureka.gif!

Just to "fix notation", remember that though envelopes will be addressed to this humble Grand Collector, the content of the letter and the aesthetics of the envelope are for everybody in the community.
jeen
Great idea Denis.
And thanks to Alejandro for orchestrating the venture.
For privacy concerns, I believe there should be some kind of notation by the contributor stating that the letter and envelope can be displayed publicly, or any exception, such as home address.

Regards,
Jeen

What about including letters that someone scans in themselves?

Hi Jeen,

You are right! I imagine the following solution: Regarding the address, the sender drops me an e-mail at acfrery@yahoo.com saying if he/she wants the address scanned; if not, I can edit that part of the envelope. If nothing is said, I will assume that the address is not to be disclosed. Regading content, letters addressed to

Snail Collection c/o Alejandro C. Frery

will be assumed to be published.

Sounds cool. Another way of not releasing a person's address would be to send the envelope within another envelope, so that only the "inner" envelope would be scanned. Unless it is important to see cancellation marks, stamps, etc. Just thinking out loud. I'm no good at envelopes anyways.
Claes
One easy way to stop the sender's address from
being scanned is simply to write it on the back of
the envelope...

Have fun!

Two new entries have been added to our Grand FPN Snail Collection.

If the images open in a too big mode, switch to "Medium Size".

Enjoy and keep them coming!

You've tempted me, I might just have to get writing. The question is, do I ink up my Duofold or do I wait until my new CS comes back from Conway Stewart fitted with a nice shiny fine nib. Such a difficult decision to make <_<
acfrery
Hi Carrie,

When I have to decide between a chocolate cake and ice cream... I choose both. In your case, why not sending your first entry with your Doufold, and saving the CS for the second one? How about that?

Some engineering has been made on my Webpage, so the link to The Grand FPN Snail Collection has changed. The new link and (hopefully) permanent URL is https://sites.ufal.br/sites/tci/Members/fre...photoalbum_view

This address includes the Gorgeous Envelopes and My Collection sections.

Enjoy!

Glad to see that my note arrived safely. On my monitor the scan of the letter isn't an accurate representation of The Sun Never Sets. The scan is making it look more browny when in fact it's quite a bright orange ink and it turns my Conway Stewart into a very wet writer.

Alejandro, glad you like the stationery, it's a very smooth paper to write on. No idea what type of paper it might be, it was a present from a friend in Australia.

I sent one. Usually my snails are very plain, but you all inspired me to bust out the rubber stamps. smile.gif

I just tried to go to The Grand FPN Snail Collection to see what's there and my computer won't let me. It says the certificate expired on 30 June 2006, or something like that. Is it safe to override that and view this site anyway, or will my computer "security" be breached in someway?
sonia_simone
Alejandro, I sent a letter about three weeks ago--you haven't seen it? I did send it Airmail, hope it finds its way to you eventually.
acfrery
Hi Simone and all contributors,

I have been abroad and very busy for about two months.

Just before my trip the guys at the University that take care of the site and of other Web services started big server changes and, among other calamities, I no longer can update my Web page. Our FPN Grand Snail Collection is hosted there.

I talked to them last week, and they promised me everything will be functional by the end of the month, and I really hope it will.

In the meantime, access to the collection can be made through http://www.tci.ufal.br/frery -> The Writing Desk

Please be patient, new excellente material is already scanned and waiting for a technical solution.

Alejandro
sonia_simone
Thank you for the update Alejandro! That sounds very frustrating about your site.

I will wait with patience and curiosity to see the new contributions.
