Hey folks,
I just received in the mail a Burgundy double-jeweled vac. Unfortunately, the triple cap rings are pretty badly dented. Also, the clip and tassie were not well cemented on to the cap and came off. So:

1. What's the best way to re-attach the clip and tassie?

2. Can anything be done about the cap rings? Unfortunately, I can't take pics until I get home later.

Edit: actually, I can upload pictures from the auction:

The striped jewel should be screwed into a brass bushing or clip screw. If they are stuck together you should try to carefully separate them and then first attach the clip to the cap using the screw. Then screw the jewel in. You can tighten the jewel by pressing against a rubber pad. Be careful to avoid breaking of the threaded stud on the bottom of the jewel.

Those rings look like someone tried to tighten them and wound up with dents. I'd say this is a rather difficult repair at best. There is a proper way to deal with loose cap rings that doesn't cause wrinkles. Again, I don't know if this can be reversed. There are a few restorers that do specialize in cap band repair. Ron Zorn comes to mind at the moment and he does frequent these pages and may offer you some words of wisdom.

Thanks, Todd. Upon closer examination, it looks like the jewel itself is broken, unfortunately. The stud is still attached to the cap.

Also, it looks like there are a few dents in the the cap near the rings. It's as if someone had used a vise or metal pliers to hold the cap there. Horrible!

If the jewel is already sheared off try a little shellac to hold it in place. You will not know but you should tell anyone you sell the pen to.

Sad to hear about the bottom end of the cap but it makes a good user pen and it looks pretty good.

I think that's what one of the previous owners did, and that's why some light leverage on the clip was enough to pull it off, along with half of the jewel. Maybe there's something a little stronger than shellac that I could use?
