Dear Ladies and Gentlemen of The Fountain Pen Network;

My name is Maria.

In reading as many topics as possible and not finding the answers; I joined this network as to go right to the experts. The membership of this Network.

I will admit immediately, that I am not an expert and even if I was full of knowledge; there is always something new to learn.

I am the proud grandaughter on the paternal side; who was a master printer and master binder (books); to which had his office near the National Theater in Washington, DC in the 1930's and up to 1945, when he passed away while my father was in the Pacific. I believe it is my grandfather's 'genes' that has my draw and great interest in anything ornamental in documents, writing and the like.

My father, who has passed away in 2005 had the most beautiful handwriting for a man I ever met. His mother was the personal secretary to the president of the American Canning Company, before meeting my grandfather.
Her writing was clear and beautiful however, the typewriter was her main writing instrument.

Ken Brown, the Calligrapher was featured on Television and got all the VHS tapes and self taught, was so-so. In 1976, I was one of the individuals to sign the guest registry on the 200th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence; being in the area between 200 to 300. I was the only person to sign it in Calligraphy.

I will never achieve the perfection of professional Calligraphers and now, I have arthritis and a bit of tremors in my hands, especially when tired. So, I do Calligraphy when I catch myself on a non-tremor moment. And, I have always wished I had the talent for Copperplate. The flexible nib is facinating. Now, since I am doing research of the American Civil War in my area; I have come across documents that clearly have been in the Copperplate style written by quill or by metal nibs. Because my grip and strength in my hands are very weak; In watching a YouTube clip of the Wet Noodle aka Swan 4500 Fountain Pen; it may be just what I am seeking. At times I cannot twist a cap off of 24oz. plastic soda/Pepsi. I will hope that someone will steer me in the right direction to find a flexible nib able to do Copperplate with a 'gimp' like me in mind.

I look forward to learning.

Respectfully,
Maria

Hello and welcome. I have a touch of arthritis (but nowhere near as severe as your's) and I find that a broad barrel is most comfortable for me.

I have RA and completely agree that the diameter of the pen barrel is key. The thicker the better. Wish I had an answer for which nib for you, but I'm clueless there.

Welcome to FPN. You will find lots of support here.

Dear All,

Thank you so much for your warm welcomes. I have had many questions answered so far.

Although computer fonts are beautiful and even; having it written out with flaws and all, shows the person receiving the letter, that you (in a general sense) took the time to write.

I look forward to learning more and write as to keep the arthritis at bay.

I agree the larger barrel is easier on the old arthritic joints. And, several members in the "Write Stuff" have been priceless as far as leads go, in finding the writing pen that will fit my needs for modern transportation and use. The dip pens, are wonderful but--darn, there isn't enough room for ink, pen and writing desk at the bank line, grocery store--thus, the goal in finding a fountain pen. In the meantime, I am using a Schaefer Calligraphy fine point nib, with cartridges. I like seeing the cashiers eyes and wishes not to let it go as to cash it. smile.gif

Respectfully,
Maria
