I submitted this piece of decorative lettering to Regional Councils, Corporate Bodies etc. as an example of my work. It takes a long time to produce speculative work like this, but I find that it generally pays off, in the long run.........and it's fun to do!

Superb work - how long would it take you to produce the above script? Do you ever experience a "slip of the pen" and have to restart?

Simply beautiful: calligraphy as fine art! How did you do the shadows? Please share…

I'd bet you'd get slightly peed-off if, just as you finish it, you spot that you left-out one of the Ts in 'adaptation' biggrin.gif

That'd be the sort of thing I'd do.... not that I could/would ever aspire to producing work like this....lovely.

Thank you all for your comments.

The work took around three hours to do, spread over a few days.

I have experienced a "slip of the pen", but rarely, thank goodness. Usually, there's no way of avoiding a fresh start.

Fortunately, this has never happened to me with a major work, such as a scroll or citation. I sometimes wonder if my concentration level is heightened with work where a slip-up would be a disaster!

I do the shadows last, by trial and error. It's easy to know when to stop, because the letters suddenly look 3 dimensional.

Wow, that's beautiful. In particular, I love the black filigree behind the red letters.

Very beautiful work, Caliken. I especially like the use of the colours red and black together here.

Are you using two different pens to write "Decorative Lettering" and then "The beauty of a letter..."? What type of pen(s) would you use to write this?

Thanks,

Moravia

That's great! Do you ever do illuminated letters/manuscripts? Like monks did in mediaeval times.

Thank you, Moravia

"Decorative Lettering" was written with a Pilot Parallel 3.8mm pen with Aurora black ink and "The beauty of a letter....." was written with a Gillott 303 flexible nib in an oblique penholder, with Higgins Eternal black ink.

I did the filigree work first in the normal, flat 2 dimensions, as I feel that the overlaying of the red, 3 dimensional letter is more effective in contrast.

For a time, I was employed as a calligrapher at the Court of the Lord Lyon - see here and I have done work of this nature, privately.
