Hi, all. I'm right on the edge of ordering a M1000, just before the prices go up. Rereading all the helpful threads about nibs, I noticed someone advised avoiding the EF ones from Pelikan as there had been a quality control issue with them. Has anyone else heard anything about this or had any experience with the EF nibs? I'm assuming them write like a F nib, since all the Pelikan nibs seem to write a little wider than usual, especially the M1000 apparently.
Thanks!
Tom

I know Richard Binder won't sell them b/c of qc issues.
I have one and it is fine I guess I got lucky

I tried an M400 with EF nib today in store and it was definately scratchy. The Fine in constrast was very smooth. I did only test one nib however.

My M215 came with a straight-from-the-factory EF and is a dream - quite smooth with a nice wet line. Perhaps I was just lucky, but you won't hear any QC complaints out of me!

I had several M200 XF nibs maybe 2 years ago that were terrible. Recently I replaced them and they have been great. Maybe they sorted out their quality control issues. These were xf in steel. Can't comment on gold.

I bought two NOS new classic P390 and P395 with EF 18k nibs just last week.
They work well, very smooth but the line is like an F from other brands.
I also bought a M150 with EF nib and the still nib here writes a thinner line.
It waorks well too.

The steel ones seem to be OK. Have one and it is satisfactory.
The problem is with the gold ones. The Pelikan factory grinders don't seem to give a damn.
Richard Binder, extra cost service because he is doing the grinding, will sell a M series with a nib ground to Extra Fine, XXF, or beyond that, as a more or less regular service. If you want an M1000 with a narrower than factory F nib, he seems to be the fellow to go too.
Or, if you want to take more time on the matter, you could buy a M1000 with a M nib and send it off to your preferred master grinder to take it down to a Fine.

I had an EF on an M1000 and it was perfect. No hesitations to order another. Chartpak is so good with C/S, it's worth a try.

I guess its luck of the draw. I just got a F M800 that needs to go in for an adjustment as the tines are visibly misaligned. Writes more like a M than a F.

I have a Pelikan Picadilly Circus (based on the M600) with a medium nib that is a scratchy and nasty fine unless I feed it a nice juicy ink - at which point, it is wonderful. And I have an M320 with a fine nib which, although it is anything but fine - M to MB in reality - is as smooth as glass no matter what I feed it. I read in one of these threads a theory that suggested that Pelikan nibs were currently being stamped with a letter at random. According to my small sample, it could be true (YMMV).

I've only tried a M800 EF nib. I may have gotten lucky but mine wrote well, albeit a bit dry, and is quite springy strangely enough...
I've only tried the broader nibs on the M1000 and they've all been great, not sure about the EF.

I have an extra fine nib on my M1000 and a fine nib on my M800. Both nibs are smooth and nice, but the M1000 EF is equal to or broader than the F nib in my M800. Odd, but true.

I've had 2 EFs for my M150 and they were both scratchy. I traded them in for F nibs. I didn't find much difference in line width, either. I don't have experience with anything higher than an M200 so maybe the more expensive pens have better nibs?

I bought a Pelikan 800 extra fine to replace a BB and found it to be a little scratchy. It took a couple of seconds of smoothing to make it just right. I later sold the red pen and bought a blue one with an extra fine already in it and it was just fine. I know most folks are nervous about adjusting tines and smoothing nibs, but with a few minutes work almost any scratchy nib can be a smooth writer. After nibs are produced, even if they have good QC in making the nib they can end up slightly miss aligned when being set in the feed and section. Do they write with every one before it goes out, I seriously doubt it. Do retailers check them before selling, nope. Of course with Pelikan you can get free and without question changes of nibs from Chartpack.

I have only one Pelikan with an EF nib. It's my worst writing nib.

Oh, after I see this topic, I start to worry about my upcoming M100 with the EF nib. I hope it will be a good one. Bless me ^^

I just got a M215 with an EF nib and it is great, I really was unsure if I'd like an extra fine, but I love it. I can't see myself using anything but an extra fine now.

I got two EF nibs on my new M3xx series from printhardcopy earlier this week. No problems with the seller nor the pens and the nibs are fantastic. They write smoothly with a bit of flex, just how I like them. They're also very much a Western EF.

I have Pelikan M100, M200, M250, M300,M400, P390 and piston school Nature pens, all with M of F nibs. All of them are terrific smooth wtiters. I have also white M100 pen with EF nib that has satisfactory steel nib but not as good as I wish for EF nib.
But my new M600 pen had awful EF nib, that was so scratchy that I killed it with my non-professional grinding. The Japanese M/MF nibs or Cross EF nibs have, sure, the better EF nibs in a market.
