Full Version: Avoiding corrosion on Waterman Patrician (LM100)

Before I buy a much wanted modern, discontinued Le Man Patrician fountain pen I'd like some expert opinion on the topic of corrosion. I believe the gold ring at the very bottom of the pen right next to the nib can be prone to corrosion - presumably from the ink. Not everyone experiences this, but more than one person has mentioned it on this FPN site.

What ingredient in the ink would cause this and would it be present in all inks? By choice I'd prefer to stick to Waterman's or Pelikan's current range of inks, though unlike many people I do prefer Quink blue (not the washable one) to Florida Blue and Royal Blue (despite my user name!). But if one is corrosive and the other isn't I can change my preferences.

I would keep clear of red ink to avoid problems of staining.

Is a wipe of the ring all that is needed after use? I don't want to empty the pen every time I put it away.

Many thanks,
Thomas

Just to repost this in the hope someone is an expert or has some knowledge on this. Thanks in advance.

I had one of these pens--a Waterman Opera--and the trim rings did corrode.

Why not try applying carnuba wax to the rings? Or just a regular car wax such as Turtle Wax. It may help and it certainly won't hurt.

Good luck,
Don
