Circulating Journal ANES 001 was delivered to me in San Diego today (or perhaps Saturday as I get it at work).

Will be heading for MA soonly.

ANES 004 arrived today in Oakland, California.

I am very excited about this!!! All the different handwritings and inks and thoughts!!! I'm going to get cozy with it for a few days and will post here when I've volleyed it to Michigan for Kendall!

Hooray for Jose; thanks for this lovely activity! It's like communal penpals!
Melnicki
Wow, that was really fun. I could have kept writing for a lot longer, but it will probably be nice to save some space to send the journal on a few more cycles!! I was so impressed at how easy it was. This morning ANES 004 was shipped off to Michigan...
JimCouch
Traveling Journal Anes005 left University Place (Tacoma) today headed to Utah! I have to say that this is a lot of fun, great idea folks, and many thanks to Jose for putting it together!

Traveling Journal 002 has arrived in NYC, and been taken home to Brooklyn! Whee! The cycle continues!

This weekend two of the six journals made the full circle back to me. I am now sending again for their second circle. I am pleased to announce the launch of Round 2 for the first and third Circulating Journal. I have enjoyed reading the entries you have written on it.

For those participating on the project, feel free to browse Circulating Journal Page for the entries and last known location of the journals. ( request username and password if you participate on the project )

Thanks for your participation, and I hope you keep enjoying it as much as I am.

I will be releasing three new journals during the following weeks.
I have a full list for journal #7, but I would love to get people signed up for journals #8 and #9 (send me a PM with the snail mail address). People who are participating in current journals welcome to participate in new journals to double the fun.

I also encourage people to issue their own journals and include me in the lists (attached suggested instruction and address list template) for the Moleskine Pocket Cahiers.

Anes: 003 is on its way to Kirk!

I received the journal....added my 2 cents....and sent it on its merry way. Great entries in this one (003)!! I enjoyed it!!
Velma
I'll join either journal #8 or #9. Should I send you a PM with my information again?
EdelmaK
Jose,

I just visited your traveling journal website and want to thank you for all of your hard work on this project.

The site is a great way for the rest of us to be able to review the contents of the various journals in circulation. I know it must be a lot of work for you to maintain this site and oversee the journals - thank you.....keep up the great job!

My, my, my.

When I got the password to look at the scans of the first-cycle travelling journals, I told myself "you're going to sit there for over an hour, Matt!" The first entry was about tea, so I stopped and poured myself a cup (I always keep a pot handy when I'm in the lab! This was a mix of nettle and dandelion leaves -- VERY healthy!) and embarked on the hour reading all the posts. There's so much to say and comment on, but I suppose I'll just wait until ANES004 comes back to me! But KIRK! Your handwriting!!! Holy moly! I love not only how beautiful it is, but also how you have a different personality with each style you employ. We all say "I hope to improve my handwriting", or even "I wish I could write like Kirk" (or others with fabulous handwritings!) but what I really hope for is to have such differences in my handwritings; it's probably one case where "multiple personalities" is a good thing!!!

I feel quite nice right now to have slowed down and spent over an hour reading all your notes. I have to admit that I feel guilty reading the journals that I haven't participated in (I'm on ANES004). But this was really an inspiring hour for me. I'm sad that I still have work to do on this late night in the lab, before I can go home and write in my own journal. (I have slowed down my writing in my own personal journal, but this has inspired me to pick up the pace)....

Cheers from California!
Matt.

Thanks, Matt. I appreciate your kind words!

I did have some problems writing in the small journal as I typically use 8-1/2" by 11" sheets. I also struggled with my handwriting feathering on the paper - but I really use wet writers. I will probably employ a different technique the next time I get the journal!!

Thanks again!!

So, in fascination of this project, and in gratitude to Jose (who is to be greatly thanked over and over for being so diligent and responsible for this project), I'm deciding to release a travelling journal.

But not yet... because I'm going to make the journal myself. I'm going to model it after the Moleskine Cahiers that Jose has been using. But my opinion is that the cahiers could use a few more sheets, for the weirdos like me that tend to ramble when they write (you should hear me talk in person!!), and also to encourage people like Kirk who write best with more space for the letters and curly-things (frills?).

However, increasing the number of pages (currently 64 tiny tiny pages) to about 96 would likely bump the US domestic postage from 63 cents to 87 cents. This may be significant because 63 cents is covered by the 78 cents attributed by two standard 39 cent stamps. For many of us, it may not be an offense to have to use a third 39 cent stamp, or a mixture of other stamps, or... (gasp!) wait in line at the post office to say hello to your friendly postal worker (how did that angry PO worker myth get started? They are always so cheerful to me!), but this might encourage lazy people to balk and hold on to the journal longer... Maybe I can calculate it to be exactly under 3 ounces, but I need to figure out the conversion from grams (to use the balance in the lab), and then that means no one should include stickers and fun things (would the extra weight from all the pigment in the ink eventually bring it over the edge? smile.gif )

Okay, I'm a worry-wort. Someone should pay me to worry (I actually think this will contribute to me becoming a good scientist...) As I am practicing making "mock-Moleskine" cahier journals for friends, please let me know what you think over the next week or so... And let's say I'm not ready to take addresses yet either until I get this all sorted out. But I went into a paper surplus store today and got a bit excited by this sparkly brown paper that I'm considering to use as the cover. I ought to get some good writing paper, though. I have "nice paper", but something like Clairefontaine might be nice... I suppose I can visit an art store for some printmaking paper and cut the thing down (which isn't exactly fun, but probably worth it)...

I put up pictures of my first trial at this (note it is severely altered from the Moleskine Cahier!!! same size pages, though, so it fit in an envelope). Check them out at this page on FLICKR; there is a long description of it on one of the pictures.

Awesome idea Melnicki! and very generous of you to make it as well.
Handmade items are very special in their own right/write (smile.gif) not to mention what is written inside. And I don't think many people would be bothered by the extra cost to ship it - at least I think it would be worth it..

Oh yeah, and if you need volunteers.... biggrin.gif tongue.gif biggrin.gif

I love the idea of writing on a handmade journal. I am sure postage will not be an issue, especially after having the experience of writing on a special handcrafted journal.

Count me in when you launch it.

Ooooh! That sounds lovely, and I'd be interested. (Intimidated, but interested.)

And Traveling Journal 002 is heading to Betty today. (It got delayed by a complicated week and a family funeral.)

Betty,

Up to a week is fine, however, I had two land at my feet within a couple of days of each other. I just felt guilty about being a "journal hog"!
