Hello Wahl fans,

I found a larger size Gold Seal coral ring-top a while ago, missing the ring-top, and more recently a broken "donor" pen in BCHR.

How does the ring-top fit and how do I remove it from one pen and get it into the other?

Thanks in advance,

Darren.

If memory serves (I am away from the workbenck) remove the inner cap and you should then see a small nut (most likely) or screw inside the cap that holds the ring holder in place.(

Thanks, Syd. I've been putting off getting a inner cap puller for some time - I have some other projects that require one also - but will post a request for recommended tools in the repair forum.

If anyone here can recommend a type or supplier please let me know.

Kind regards,

Darren.

I don't think that is correct. Offhand, I can't think of a single pen I've ever disassembled where the ringtop fitting was held in by a nut inside the cap, as opposed to screwing into the material of the cap itself. Some all-metal pens have the ring fitting as part of the cap top disk, but in those cases there is no separate, screw-in, fitting.

To remove a ring fitting without twisting and breaking the shaft (which is often corroded and embrittled), you need to apply heat. One of the best methods is a soldering iron applied directly to the fitting. Heat for a while, then try gentle torque on the fitting, and heat some more until the fitting unscrews easily.

True when I replied to the original question I was picturing the inner retainer screw for the soldier clip pens that holds the clip in place. Nonetheless, there is a threaded retainer I call a nut inside the ring top pen. On plastic gold seal ring-top Wahl-Eversharp pens the removal of the ring-top assembly can indeed be done with the unscrewing of the ring top from outside the pen. Inside the pen, above the inner cap is another plastic washer with a threaded nut in place. Yes, in an unaltered pen, the ring-top does screw into the the black plastic cap end-piece, but it also screws in beyond that and into the threaded "nut" that is integrated into the plastic washer. The corrosion that David refers to occurs between the screw shaft of the ring top assembly and the metal nut. Heat will help. Some non threatening solvents (orange oil or some lighter fluid) will penetrate these threads and make the removal easier. Many times when the restorer unscrews the ring top without disassembling the cap the ring top come out and it seems that all is fine, but usually in doing so some force is required and in my experience, the tip of the shaft of the ring top screw gets torqued off with the remainder of the shaft staying inside the nut inside the cap. Now for most restorers, that might be just fine because the remaining ring-top shaft contains enough threaded area to screw back into the plastic of the end cap, but it is never as well secured as it was when it was held in place by screwing into the plastic end cap material as well as the metal threads of the inner retainer "nut". By removing the inner cap and thoroughly cleaning out the old crud you will expose the tip of the ring top shaft nut and that is where a drop of penetrating oil can be applied and left to sit overnight. Then the ring-top can be removed intact. Maybe heat will achieve the same result, but in my experience those metal bits corrode together pretty tightly and need to be addressed from the inside of the pen.
