I absolutely adore my Cedar Blue Parker "51". It's my second-favorite pen, and would be tied for first place if not for the sentimental value attached to my Pelikan. smile.gif Today I filled it with Visconti Blue, and the result surprised me: not because the ink looks better than I expected -- I love this ink -- but because it left me feeling strangely disappointed and unfulfilled. It's a beautiful blue, but it's somehow... lacking.

What I want, what I need for this pen, is an ink that is precisely the wonderful dark navy grey-blue-black shade of Cedar Blue.

Might anyone know of an ink, or an ink mix, that would meet this need? Or be able to give me a hint or two that might lead me to the right mix?

No.

Err, I mean, I don't know. embarrassed_smile.gif How about Legal Lapis?

Sure. Quink Blue Black. Works for me in my Cedar Blue.

Noodler's Tahitian Pearl does it for me in my "51".

I have the same pen, my DJ vacumatic, none of my inks match that colour perfectly, if you find one let me know!
Djehuty
Quink Blue-Black, eh? I'll have to add that to the ever-expanding List of Inks for which I Must Beg Samples from James. smile.gif

I'll probably have to start experimenting with mixes. I need one of those paint color-matching gizmos, but filled with ink!

I can vouch for that - just received that combo on a postcard! thumbup.gif

If it's the same color as my new little Demi "51" then I'd recommend the new iroshizuku syo-ro from Pilot. Imo, it's a perfect match.

Wanted to suggest Rohrer & Klingner verdisgris or Diamine blueblack but then I noticed that Cedar blue is nothing like Teal Blue.

If it is greenish, those two inks might fit. Otherwise I can suggest Sailor blue.

Maybe the *old* Omas blue (the one which came in large bottles); it may be hard to find though.

Best I’ve found, and full of period “feel” is Noodler’s Baystate Blue. It evokes the 1940s (that was the Noodler’s folks’ intention), and it’s also a bright, saturated color. Workd perfectly in my 51s, which wear F and XF nibbery.

Hmm... maybe there's a range of Cedar Blue colors? There's absolutely no green in mine. It's a very dark blue-black with distinct greyish undertones that show up in natural light. None of the iroshizuku inks (judging by their color samples) is quite right, and they're all much too pale. Baystate Blue is a very bright blue. Sailor Jentle Blue, judging by this review, is in the right general family, but again is too pale.

I have a sample of Quink Blue-Black on order. If that isn't quite right, it'll be time to begin experimenting with the ink-mixing kit. smile.gif

Thanks for the suggestions! smile.gif

You are right, Sailor blue has grey hues but is still blue. Sailor blueblack is definitely on the grey side. Nothing that I would consider blueblack.

Quink blueblack is nearly as greenish as Waterman blueblack. But mixed 1:1 with Quink blue it becomes a nice blue. You may try the mix.

Even darker is the 1:1 mix of Pelikan blue (or any other medium blue like Lamy, Quink or Waterman) and Pelikan blueblack. Might be the best fit for your Cedar blue. With some drops of (Pelikan) black added it becomes a blackblue. But I like the blue-blueblack mix better.

Rohrer & Klingner verdisgris

Yes, that's the ink which matches my Cedar Blue 51 perfectly!

Re: the iroshizuku inks - definitely not all pale. The tsuki-yo is a blue-black color in my Décimo and the syo-ro is a dark tealish in my True Writer Sea Glass. Here's a quick pic from my digital camera, but the pen is darker in the pic than it really is, while the ink is pretty close, though the one on the right (the syo-ro) looks a bit lighter here than it really is, but not by much. The ink on the left (tsuki-yo) is spot on. (The lighting is directly overhead and is an Ott full spectrum light. The paper is a Levenger 3x5 index card.) The greater contrast is most likely from my Coolpix camera.

I wish I could get the true color of both the pen and the ink because it truly is a match. (The light source does matter, of course, as it always does.)
Djehuty
Hmm... where does one get the Iroshizuku inks? I was already interested in the tsuki-yo, but now even more so. Thank you for that photo, Tricia! smile.gif

Also, if anyone has Rohrer & Klingner Verdigris and would be interested in an ink sample exchange, I'd be glad to send you samples of anything I have that seems interesting. My collection isn't terribly extensive yet, but I have Caran d'Ache Storm and Grand Canyon, and those seem to be at least somewhat less commonplace.

Have a Pelikan M400 inked with R&K verdisgris. If you are interested in a sample, I can send you one by snail mail. I can send you a scan, too but the colour you will see depends too much on scanner and screen.
Djehuty
Thank you very much, piembi! smile.gif

Mine has been inked with the FPN Starry Night for a couple months now, and the color is great! Not quite as light at the cedar blue, but a stunning ink and a great match.

I will give it a try:

but piembi is right; best to compare colors on paper.

Cheers
