Dear Colleagues,

I have been offered an old style Pelikan M600 with a choice of a 18K medium / broad nib but I have a budget set aside for an New Style Pelikan M600.....

Could any one tell me if the size difference between the two is negligible ( not that much too be of importance )....and is their a difference between the 14K and 18K nib ?....and what would be a good price for an old style Pelikan M600?.

I have compared the old M600 and M400 and the size is very much the same....I don't know if I should wait and just get the new style M600 ?.....

thanks guys....

p.s. is the medium nib more popular than the broad for everyday writing ?

if it's any help in making up your mind, you can get the new M600 for as low as $161 brand-new in various colors, with shipping from singapore at $20, from this dealer (castle98 on ebay, pensinasia otherwise):

no relation, etc.; i've been tracking pelikan prices myself, having bought a few quite recently to shore up my collection.

I think the old M600 is approximately the size of the current M200/400.

Exactly, the new style is larger.

is there any difference in the pre-bock nibs? Personally, I find the 400 size a little small for my hand, the new 600 just right but I much prefer the vintage Pelikan nibs from the 50's.

I put in a vote for the old style m600 because you can save up some more money and get the new style m600 at any time. The old M600's is, to me, one of those pens you have to hope some has some NOS someplace. So yes, my vote was placed on possible availability. If size is an issue then I would say go with the pen that fits your hand the best. The 18k nibs on the old style M600 and the M650 are both smooth right out of the box without John Mottishaw or Richard Binder touching them. The 14k nib on the M250 I have needs a little smoothing work done to it but it's an extra fine. I don't have a Pelikan that isn't a good writer. My answer simplified would be:
1. New M600 if you prefer something larger than an M400.
2. Old Style if you are worried you can't get one in the future.
I hope this helps some instead of confuses.

Mike

(P.S. I have no clue why I have a blank comment above this one!!!)

The old style 600 is really just a 400, for all intents and purposes. If you desire the size of a 600, get a new model. Get it from Richard, and you'll have no complaints.

I have both, and for my average hands the new M600 is more ergonomic, while the old, small one is usable but a bit short and has an insufficient diameter for me.

Right now NOS old M600 is selling at a cheaper price compared to new M400.
Essentially the same pens, but with a 18k nib compared to a 14k.

Smaller than the new M600 and cheaper.

It is not approximately the size of the current M400, but it is exactly the size of the current M400, because the old M400 was discontinued, the old M600, which was just a more luxurious styled (old) M400, was renamed to M400 and finally a new M600 was created to offer a fountain pen being between the M400 and the M800.
