I just joined the FPN in a search for knowledge about an interest that I have had for years but never really knew much about. I've been buying pens since the late 70's and I have accumulated about 25. Most are Mt. Blancs, a few Montegrappas, and an Oscarson. I have several ball points, purchased early on that I really dislike. Most of my fountain pens take cartridges but I prefer to purchase fountain pens that accept bottle ink going forward. I have a few rollerballs that serve me well. Fountain pens, it seems to me, compel deliberate use, like a single shot rifle. A signature is no simple task but rather several steps that allow common sense or buyers remorse to set in before the deal is done.

Now I use an MB 149 at my desk and I carry an MB Boheme in my pocket. I would like to purchase a large ink capacity, 149 sized, highly reliable, non MB ink bottle filled pen, that would work as a regular user in and out of the office. Any suggestions will be appreciated sincerely.

Welcome to FPN!! smile.gif

I like bigger pens, and here are 2 pens that I have gotten to love. (1) The Pelikan M1000 and (2) the Waterman Edson.

Hi there!
Yup, a Pelikan M1000 is the best alternative to an MB 149 (if you ask me).
Otherwise an M800 or even better -- if you have the dough -- a Toledo M900/910.

Best regards

Well y'all, I've been watchin out for Russian tanks but I ain seen none on I-75 yet. We were in Florida when they invaded but we ain had no trouble yet. I don know what they goin to do tomorrow as there ain no vodka sales on Sunday.

Welcome Abacus. I don't have a 149 to compare it to, but I like the Sailor 1911 (the larger version). Beautiful pen, and highly reliable. Just beware that Japanese nib sizes run smaller that western nib sizes. A fine nib is more like a western extra-fine.

Hey -

Only the Pelikan M1000 fits your criteria - high capacity piston filled mechanism, MB149 sized length and girth, a reliable worhorse, and not a Montblanc.

A nice wet Binder stub or cursive italic grind on that big M1000 nib and you're all set.

My other suggestions (Waterman Edson Black Diamond, Michel Perchin anything, or a Faber Castell Pen of the Year - the parquet lemonwood) were each cartridge / converter pens - bottle filled with the converter, but not high capacity.

Wait, what - you have a David Oscarson?! Will you be my friend?

Fill out your profile when you have time so we'll know more about you.

Russia would not need tanks to invade Atlanta. The Marxist Mayor would welcome them with a ticker-tape parade down Peachtree.

Now if the Ruskies ventured outside the beltline, then they'd be in for a whuppin'

Hello and welcome to FPN.

Hello and welcome to FPN. Kick off your shoes and have a stroll around the grounds. There is lots of good information as well as people willing to share information. Heck you might even pick up a pen or two at the Marketplace.

Once again welcome.
