Full Version: Symphony vs Skyline?

I recently picked up what I think is a Symphony, though there is no model name on the pen. The nib end of the barrel is shaped similarly to my Skyline, but the section is slimmer, and the nib and feed is quite small in comparison, smaller even than a Skyline demi. The lower end of the barrel is not as tapered as the Skyline. The section is slimmer than the demi also, though the pen is 5 1/2" long when closed. From what I had read, I was expecting the nib and feed to be the same as the Skyline. Is this unusual, or perhaps a later model than the Symphony? Here is a pic showing the new pen along side a standard Skyline.

i think you have a latter model of the symphony (3rd generation??). have you checked mr Binders site. he has a lot of info on this: http://www.richardspens.com/?page=ref_info...ony_profile.htm

the nib on my symphony is smaller than that of the skyline.

PD. by the way, you got nice pens!!!!

Hi,

The nibs on all Symphonies are not smaller than the nibs on all Skylines.

The pen shown is a late model 707 with expected gold tone cap. The late pens I'm told were not called Symphony, but then we call Balance many pens that were not so shown in catalogs. The pens essentially are symphonies even if not so noted. More philosophy another day.

The 707 was the low line Symphony. The 701 had two tone cap with thin line and intermediate size nib. The 703 had two tone cap with largest nib, larger than at least some Skylines.

Some examples from my website

Thanks to both of you for the ID and references! It has a fine nib with a fair amount of flex.

As a random aside, I think it's a shame the Symphony isn't more collected/used. Personally, I like the look of it a lot more than a Skyline; looks like a Sheaffer with some curves. smile.gif

I find they are rather scarce, many more Skylines show up on eBay than Symphony's. Now that I know what to look for, I will be trying to come up with a 703.

My advice would be to give the 703 a miss and aim for an earlier model Sympony with a "slipper" cap ( the cap has a stepped and looks like a foot in a slipper...) which looks a lot better and has less problems. The first and second models both have slipper caps, the first the better looking cap IMO but not in gold. I have a second model Sympony with a gold cap and its both attractive and a great writer- my favorite.
