Just thought I'd share a Coronet that I got as part of a "group buy" a while back:

(Another example of why I hate posting the cap!)

Beautiful pen! I have the pencil. If you ever decide to sell the pen, let me know.

I found it at an antique store in Mesa!!!!

Always a great find when its a Coronet. You may have noticed that the pen shown here looks different from other Coronets you may have seen. This one has smaller lattice work bands on 4 places (the barrel fore and aft, the cap end and the cap lip.) Other Coronets have larger triangular "darts" in the cap top lattice work band. You might be interested to know that the pen shown here is a "Jewelry Store" Coronet and was sold to and through jewelry stores. The pens with the larger triangles was sold through pen and stationery stores. There is an interesting history associated with these 2 pen designs.

Back "in the day" sales territories were rigidly controlled by the manufacturer and vigorously defended by the salesman. It was very bad form for if not sales suicide for a company to violate their salesman's territory. The retailer's "territory exclusive" was protected too. Not like today when you can find the same brand of pen in almost every pen shop in the same town or city. Back then, a factory salesman as well as the retailer had expectations tantamount to Rights to their exclusive territory. The territory was well defined.

BUT the manufacturer, still wanted to find a way to get their pens in more and more stores and more and more consumer's hands. It may have happened earlier, too, but at least as far as Coronets go, when the Gold filled Coronet came out it was "jewel-like" enough it seems to qualify as an item that jewelry stores could sell. I could go on an on about this, but the short of it is that with the variation in design, the Coronets could be sold to both jewelry stores AND pen/stationery stores in the same territory by 2 different salesman. A win-win? Seems so.

There was a 3rd cap design with small squares instead of triangles, that properly went on the plastic barreled Coronets. I have seen them incorrectly mated to gold filled coronet barrels with the triangles and being sold as one proper, complete pen...As Dom De Luise would say in one of the closing scenes in' Blazing Saddles" WRONG!

Anyway Coronets are the coolest! The Coronet is my everyday pen!

Thanks Syd!
Cool!!
This pen writes a wet smooth Fine.
Perfect if you ask me.
BTW, how common or rare are the three designs?

Klangboden,

I don't remember the name of the antique dealer. Somewhere on the North side of town.
She had a 2'x2'x2' box full of pens and pencils.
I picked out 25 and paid more than I had ever dreamed I would at one time.
With the Coronet I got two DJ "51"s, a Plum "51" set, a Waterman 452, a solid gold Sheaffer Nostalgia, and 18 others.
