Full Version: Platinum President v. Sailor 1911 Full Size

The 1911 full size is my favorite pen but I was looking at the Platinum President on line and they looked to be from the same blood line. Maybe Platium and Sailor intersect at some point but I am curious if anyone has had the President and 1911 and can comment on differences.

Thanks for any comments.

I would love to have both of these Japanese Giants in a whole array of nibs!! drool.gif drool.gif drool.gif drool.gif drool.gif

I have a President (Red, Fine) and some 1911 Large Sizes. The President is a touch longer capped, but it looks like it is the same cap removed.

IMHO:

The bands (mine are gold on both pens) appear a little wider on the Sailor at the end pieces but about the same elsewhere. There's also a medal band at the end of the section ont he Platinum.

Both nibs are excellent, but I find the Sailor's own nibs to be just a touch flexier (21k) than the Platinum's (18k) nib. Otherwise both are smooth.

I don't know for sure (perhaps someone else does), but I think the Platinum nib is German-made and hence somewhat stiffer and a little wider in the line. That is speculation on my part, but I do find the Platinum to be stiffer and a touch wider (comparing Sailor's Fine to the President's fine.)

My personal choice (and I think it is truly a matter of taste) favors the feel of the Sailor. I own several of those and only one Platinum. However, the President is an outstanding pen and I love to write with it.

For what it's worth....

Hi...

Are all Platinum nibs of German origin? I was hoping they were made in Japan like the Sailors and Pilots. The crystal ball gazers have definitely seen a Platinum President or a 3776 somewhere in my future!

I'm pretty sure that Platinum nibs are made in Japan.

I would hope that Platinum nibs are made in-house considering how Nakaya consists of former Platinum nibmeisters and artisans.

That's great news about the nibs...it would make sense that Platinum made their own AND that they'd have a different feel than the Sailor.

Thanks for the input, I feel much better about my President!
