Like most of us who regularly use flex nibs, I am occasionally asked where to get different sizes of nibs when, of course, one size is all that is required for different sizes of lettering, as I've tried to demonstrate here

Whoever's playing Bach is awesome!

Oh, nice lettering there! Do you have specific sizes at which you practice?
caliken
The pianist is Murray Perahia and his playing is awesome!

I've never thought of letter size when practicing Copperplate - as one nib does all sizes, it doesn't seem to matter. I suppose, as with all lettering, larger sizes will tend to show the imperfections a bit clearer.

Sorry Ken, but finally I can find an error on your works: missed the dot over the "i" in "with" word! biggrin.gif
Jokes apart, I agree on one nib for different lettering sizes, but I think hand is equally important, and I can see mine isn't good like yours.
Thank you for posting!

Thank you for this, caliken. I'm learning many things from the video. Beautiful penmanship as always!

Thank you all for your comments

Giampaolo :-

I did notice the missing dot, but too late to do anything about it!

I might have known that eagle eyes on this forum would spot the error!

I don't have an interest in using a flex nib -- I'm afraid it would defeat me without a fair fight. But seeing how the weight of the line can be so well modulated is really impressive. Quite a virtuoso performance and with a very appropriate soundtrack. (Now I have to find that version of the Goldbergs!) Thanks caliken!

Thanks, Doug.

If you really haven't tried flex nib writing yet, I urge you to give it a go.

Once you get past the stage of periodically sticking the point into the paper, splattering ink spots everywhere and fighting against this foreign body which seems to have a mind of its own, you develop control and the change is magical. Without getting too poetic, controlling the constantly changing swells and hairlines is almost sensual and quite irresistable. I can quite happily covers sheets of paper with swoops and dips, just for pleasure.

Murray Perahia's Goldbergs is on Sony Classical SK 89243 - superb playing and superb sound quality.
