Full Version: Emotica advice

Hello. I have a yellow Emotica (40th birthday present from a friend) and absolutely love it. So much, in fact, that I have uninked my other pens, bought a folder holder for it and am now contemplating a matching BMW motorcycle. I really love this pen.

I use it everywhere and it is seriously showing wear. Please understand that I am fine with the wear because this is a working pen and it adds character to a fabulous writing instrument. I expected that it would get a little stained but the rubbery stuff is chipping or flaking off the sides of the cap right near the top. I learned quickly that the funky clip is to be used to prevent this sort of a thing. Again, I am not upset about it because the material underneath is shiny yellow so when it all falls off 20 years from now the pen will look new again.

My question is this: Has anyone else experienced this with the black or yellow? The flaking thing, I mean? Again, I am going to get another one anyway because I am so in love with it and I am getting paranoid about it getting pinched or dropped or whatever because it is my only pen these days. It is my only pen because every other pen I pick up and try feels just plain wrong in my hand so I don't bother using anything else. It's just annoying.

I am torn between getting a black or yellow. I love the rubber finish and I think I might like to put a black cap on my yellow body if the black appears to not flake as easily. I only use Old Manhattan ink in it and only write these days on yellow Rhodia in my black folder holder with yellow folders. See the trend?

If anyone is interested, there is a hand written review of it on the London Pen Club blog.

Anyway, thanks for the input in advance.

I would try and find out from someone at Omas about the flaking of the rubbery stuff - perhaps the cap/barrel material is faulty and needs to be replaced.

You might want to send an email/perhaps even call Kenro Industries about it - they handle the Omas repairs in the US - a link to their contact page is below.

Thank you, Mike, for your response. I think I will just go on as planned, though, as I really don't mind the flaking. I thought I would but it lends character. How cool will this pen look, years from now, with a shiny yellow cap and a rubbery yellow body? Very! I will most likely order a spare yellow because, well, I really like yellow. Cheers.

I have the Yellow Emotica too. Same thing is happening to mine as well. That is, the protective layer (lacquer or acrylic coating on top of the yellow rubber) is flaking off in select areas of the barrel and top. I have contacted the importer and he suggested to send the pen back to them and they in turn will send it back to Omas in Italy. The plant is down for vacation in August. But he informed me that others have complained of the same coating failure....Omas will only issue another yellow body in exchange for yours, not exchange it for the polished versions in blue or red, which is what I would like to do, since I believe the coating will fail in the future.

I am sending mine in at the end of the month....

I can tell you one thing about Kenro here in the U.S. I personally drove my Omas Ogiva Vision out to Kenro and handed it to the representative on Long Island last year because it was leaking and I could not get the ink out of the very end of the cap (under the gasket that holds the clip). It bothered me to give this pen up but it really annoyed me having a demonstrator that was turquoise.

I waited about six months for the pen to come back from Italy and the representative here who is such a nice man was not able, most of the time, to get any information about the whereabouts of my pen. I felt so lost and vowed that if I ever bought another Omas I would never send it to Kenro. This has figured greatly in my pen buying decisions and I have not bought an Omas since then - a shame since they are such wonderful pens.

In your case I would suggest that you send the pen back for exchange. If you are planning on getting another one, why not wait until they've made improvements so this sort of thing does not happen with these delightful little pens?

Thanks for the advice, everyone. Much appreciated. Robert, I may come back to you after you have sent in your pen to get a feel of how long it took and how pleased you are with sending it in. I hope all goes well for you.

K,

I own the black Emotica and so far after about 1.5 years of ownership and regular use, have only seen a tiny chip at the top of the cap near the "O".

Omas released two other colors that are not rubberized as their barrel material. If I am right, they are red and blue respectively. I think it is much lighter, though in a different category of aesthetics (i.e. more glitzy) compared to the more down-to-earth workhorse pen of the yellow and black. But if you are worried about flaking, and if having a spare Emotica sounds like a great idea, then the newer models are the ones to go.

I don't think I will be ordering any more for my store. I have had to return several back to the distributor to have them refinished. Turn around is about 4-6 weeks. Not to bad, since It has been a year for a Visconti I am still waiting for. ohmy.gif It is really ashame because it is damn good loking pen. But for that price, the finish should be more durable than what I have seen. Great pen if you stand it on on the clip and just look at it. But my pens are for writing, not looking.

Just got a red one in the slick surface and it does have some weight to it. There is some wearing on the section at the point the cap clicks on but nothing at all to the surface. It is a fine nib and it's neat that there is some flex to it. Might cause me to look at other titanium nibs.
