Any advice on how to remove the metal protector around the ink sac would be appreciated. Is the protector cemented in or does it unscrew? Is heat okay? Thanks.

Got it - friction fit. Great writer.

Glad you got it sorted. Although these aren't the 'sought after' pens from CS, being rather after their best, they are very worthy and there is no reason why they shouldn't write as well as any of them.
