I've heard that they're increasing the prices on M1000 - has anybody else heard anything about this?
penmanila
who are? the prices on the M1000 vary very widely. i'd say that the prices are going down, if anything. it's available on ebay (buy-it-now) right now for just $316, for both the green striped and the all-black! see here:

We've just received notice that Pelikan will be raising its prices an average of about 8% on September 1. If you've been contemplating a Pelikan purchase, we recommend you make your purchase before the end of this month.

Hello,

Finally im here. thanks for praise, silbee ,julio and others. You both are my good customers too, who got faith and trust that i can deliver the products to you, althought im a new seller.

Im just a ordinary seller, who trying my best to deliver to customer satisfactory.

As a seller myself sometime i wonder what is classified as one as "good" seller

Good seller as someone who give you the best price or deliver products timely to you ?

As internet world getting transparency about prices, ebay prices is so tranparency. The one giving the cheapest price is the good seller ? Certain brand definitely tarnish by slashing prices in internet world

It is a consumer world now.

This is my first post in fountain pen network. Hope you guys dont mind, just my personal thoughts.

NEVER DID UNDERSTAND THAT THING! headsmack.gif

A new M1000 in its homeland today retails at 470* Euro. That makes 679* USD. Even with a 20% discount, 519* USD.

Today -- quite in general, but at least as re exchange rates -- all times are bad times for the USD.

Hmmmm.........

Well, it COULD be that all the pens they ship to the U.S.A. are seconds and the ones that they sell in the E.U. are the quality hand made ones that did pass the rigorous quality control process.

I'd guess that there's a bigger market in the USA for luxury products, along with greater competition. I also wonder... is the M1000 price you quoted before or after taxes? Are there other taxes hidden in the price?

The other thing is, people are often willing to pay more for products made nationally, out of pride (misplaced?) or to "support" local companies. Companies know this and squeeze as much as they can out of it, often with the help of government. "Buy local!" "Support home-grown businesses!" etc etc.

SAME PLAYER SHOOTS AGAIN!

Okay, I made a mistake, but it was in my favour (f'ya know what I meana say). I have edited my original reply above, accordingly, but to repeat here....

M1000 retail price here = 470 Euros = 679 USD (today)
M1000 but with 20% off = 359 Euros = 519 USD (today)

Note #1: All of those 4 prices above include the 19% German sales tax.
Note #2: I really can't believe that Pelikan keeps their best samples here and sends the leftovers to the U.S.
Note #3: On the contrary, I could imagine instead that they send the best ones to the rest of the world but leave the trash here, like MB does, but that's another story.

My gf told me that the M1000 green stripes she bought for my birthday last june, had been payed around EUR 250 from a german dealer on ebay.

Usually it makes quite a difference where you buy: an internet-store or a physical type store with real people helping you.

The internetshop can sell from his attic/garage, the only time he spends on you is packing the stuff and putting your address on it.
But in a real store there's a guy spending his time showing you several pens, inking them, cleaning them etc, quite often t hear: thank you, I will think about it, after which the customer goes home and orders from the internet..
I have been in the store several times for 90 minutes or more, trying this or that, ending up with just the pen I like. I don't mind paying extra for that service.

That really does depend on the stores. I have said before that I have received beyond stellar service from internet sellers and less than acceptable tolerance from B&M stores. It really does depend on who you buy from, whether click or brick. And paying more just because they have a store is just throwing money away.

Yeah it is quite almost true, but sometimes internet shops are not so cheaper than real dealer. I bought a lot of pens in stationery shops with special prices and some pelikan dealers on ebay are real german stationery dealers.
I think it depends on something else, if for example the online/real dealer is a luxury shop or not. You can find good choices in little stationery shops as I did.
Moreover it is not so easy to find High End pens like M1000, either online or in real shops; in real shops is impossible to find it at a good price, and online it is always near you the fear of a swindle. For this reason I usually read the feedback carefully, paying attention on what other customers bought while they wrote a positive feedback and why it is sometimes negative.
Normal online shops are not for occasional business risks, first because is quite impossible to find a pen at the half of the price in their product offering.
lapis
To RMN and all....

... that is exactly my view. I buy almost everything at "my" store here in Berlin, not only because they offer everything for 20% off, but because I know 2-3 of the specialists there really well (and they know me) and we often spend a whole hour tying out this that and the other. Like 20 different samples of one and the same model, just to pick out the smoothest and wettest nib. For me, that's worth something, that's why I remain a faithful customer there.

BUT..., when I hear that the same model (manufactured in Germany, and let's say for 200 Euros +) is available in the U.S. (or anywhere else) for 1/3 to 1/2 of the price, then I start to think anew.

Hi all, I was looking at retail prices in Germany, UK and USA:

Retail Germany 470 Euros = US$679 (incl. 19% tax)

Retail UK £370 = US$680 (incl. 17.5% tax)

Retail USA $655 (excl. tax)

Quite similar. I quickly looked at ebay. I found it for 239 Euros brand new M1000 in Germany. Pretty good deal.

Didn't see that one, or would have picked it up at that price. Perhaps it had gone by the time I got there. headsmack.gif
