I like the concept of the pen suggested above, with modification.
Have they even started construction on the Statue of Responsibility? It hardly seems to summarize America, as it is yet unbuilt and obscure.
If you are looking for a geographical counterbalance, maybe the Golden Gate Bridge or the ARIZONA Memorial?
