Full Version: Bicyclists?

I've recently started riding for fitness and I though it a good idea to keep a journal to track my travels and progress.

What do you guys and gals jot down? I've been keeping track of:

Date and start time
Distance
Duration

I've been planning on adding a rough outline of the course taken as well, though haven't started to yet. What do you do? Any suggestions?

For gym machines that provide work-out summaries (equivalent mileage and calories burned), I'll keep track in an Excel spreadsheet.

For jogging and bicycling, I note duration and estimate mileage.

For years, I've idly thought about getting a wall map and tracking the progress of where I could be in a month (or however long) if I weren't running in circles, as it were.

Heh.

I have the running totals (pun unavoidable), so I could still do this. Get a map and long pins and thread.

This is what I use: http://www.shastasoftware.com/CycliStats/

It's a little costly, but it's invaluable if you want to keep serious track of your cycling progress. Everything you could possibly need to monitor is there.

Hope this helps.

BTW ethernuatrix, they also have running and fitness software. http://www.shastasoftware.com/StrideWare/index.htm

Oh yea, the usual disclaimer-- I'm not part of the company......etc.

When I was into marathon running about 8 years ago I always kept a running log, and then when I got seriously into road cycling, I got a Polar heart rate monitor (a 720i) that created graphs of workouts that included duration, heart rate, distance, elevation gain, etc. These days, since returning to India and getting back on the bike, I've given up on I mostly journal about the thoughts I have on my rides, rather than anything about the rides themselves.

I've been riding for about 17 years. When I started, I kept a written log. Date, distance of ride, year to date distance, average speed, and just a description of the ride - the route, weather, anything memorable...
I started racing after about 3 years and started keeping my log on a spreadsheet. I kept this up until last year (I don't race anymore). I realized that keeping the log had become a chore that I couldn't wait to get done. I used to enjoy writing the log almost as much as the ride. This year, I went back to the written log and am enjoying it again.
Looking back on old entries brings back the memory of a particular ride, even after years.
