Full Version: White residue on NoNonsense feed

Bought a Sheaffer NoNonsense off FPN recently.

Discovered that the underside of the nib had this fine white powder on it.

I soaked the nib in water, wrote with it inked, and soaked it in water again.

But after I let the nib dry, the underside of the nib still has this powder:

I thought it might be just the plastic getting old, but now I'm wondering if it's something more serious...

Could someone please tell me whether this is normal for NoNonsense pen nibs?

I own several NoNonsense and "cartridge" pens, and none of them have this residue on their feeds. Does it smell bad?

Looks like this pen had some fungus growing in it. Better get some SterilInk from Giovanni at Tryphon and treat the pen. You may need to discard the ink in any bottles into which you have dipped this pen -- if it is fungus, the spores are now in that ink and may spread to other pens. Be on the lookout for SITB (Stuff In The Bottle) since that will be a sure sign that the ink is contaminated and that this pen was too.

This is based on my own experience with a seller who is no longer on FPN -- sent me a pen with considerable fungus growing on the nib, in the feed, and in the cap, plus gross amounts of dried out PR Plum all over the nib and in the cap, claimed not to know anything about it. The fungus looked a lot like your "white residue" although mine was actually in clumps on the outside of the nib as well as being in the feed itself. SterilInk made it a good pen (I'm still using it). (I didn't get it anywhere NEAR any open ink bottles until after it was treated -- even kept it sealed in a plastic bag, away from inks and other pens.)

That nib didn't come into contact with any of my ink bottles, luckily.

I tried using the pen as an eyedropper first, so I dropped ink directly into the barrel.

Unfortunately, I let this nib soak with a nib from another NoNonsense. And I also used a converter to flush the nib with water...

Collateral damage so far: 1 nib and 1 converter (1 small glass bottle too but those are easily replaceable) sad.gif sad.gif sad.gif
