Hello all,

My Stipula 22 had a nib mishap today and it was and was not my fault at the same time... Confused? You'll see what I mean in a minute. First let me say I have the Blue "Forget me not" Stipula 22 with the 14k nib, 0.9mm nib more precisely. When I received mine the nib was clicking so I learned how to remove the nib and fixed it. That was actually quite a bit of fun since when you remove that nib it comes off the feed!

Today I changed ink in that pen and I removed the nib for a better cleanup. Since I felt my nib was a bit stiff and I keep hearing about Stipula light "spring" I decided to mount my nib a bit more out on the feed to have a larger surface of the nib hanging from the feed. The pen still wrote well but I didn't gained much spring. When I put the cap back and twisted to close it I felt (and heard) something very wrong yikes.gif I immediatly removed the cap and saw that the nib had been mangled. Somehow the clearance between the nib and the cap when close is so small that just a mere 1 or 2 mm longer nib (when I mounted it) meant that the cap wrecked havoc sad.gif

I had received a nib smoothing kit from Richard Binder last week and had not used it yet. I intended to get some practice on some cheap pen first... Well it turn out my practice pen is going to be my Stipula crybaby.gif I spent about an hour trying to fix the nib, and did improve it a bit, but I have a long way to go to get it back to the shape it was before.

So hear my little advice: yes you can extend the nib a bit but... DON'T for the sake of your nib!

I have this pen myself, so I'm grateful for your post but so sorry for your mishap. I recently got mine stubbed and love it even more. Good luck on the fix. thumbup.gif

Hi,

Another thing that could happen is that you could break the plastic collar holding everything together.

Don't try extending the nib like this on any pen, and if you have to, check the clearances first.

Extending the nib is not going to give you any more spring as in flexibility.

Hello Dillon,

are you sure that Stipula nib/feed unit have such a plastic collar? There was none the first time I removed it and nothing broke at that time, the nib simply came smoothly out no sound hmm1.gif

Eh eh trust me I learned a lesson about checking clearance first wink.gif and you are right there was not much improvement in term of flexibility...

I must say I am not overly impressed with the internal design of a clip that can do this to a nib though...

Hi,

All the screw caps I know of can do this to the nib if the clearances are not correct, and I've seen a number of pens with nibs mangled this way.

Yes, Stipula pens have a plastic collar in the grip section holding the nib and feed together as a unit. This collar can be unscrewed out of the section holding the nib and feed together as a unit. You can pull the nib and feed out without breaking it, but if you extend the nib, then proceed to write with it, you can overstress the collar and break it.

Thank you for the informations smile.gif

As for the cap, in my case the nib did not touch the bottom end of the cap, but rather the inside part of the clip. Not all cap have inside part that can catch the nibs, hence why I complained about the design of this one.
