Full Version: My first pen purchase

Well, I went into NYC last week with the intention of buying a pen, ink, and some notebooks. I had some other errands to run so; my first stop was Art Brown's. They had just moved into their new location, and things were a bit hectic for them. The sales guy still took the time to talk to me and directed me toward a Lamy Safari. From what I've read on the net, it seemed like I couldn't go wrong with that purchase. They were out of converters so they gave me some extra cartridges.

I also wanted to start shopping for an upgrade to ask for as a gift. This is when things became truly overwhelming. I'm looking for something for about $100, give or take. There were so many to look at! I tried a Sheaffer Prelude (I think that's what it was) - chrome? and found it a bit heavy. I also fondled the Pelikan M200, 400, etc. Very nice, but it seems like there's not much room below the threads for my fingers. I looked at a few others, but can't remember which!! headsmack.gif

I picked up a couple of notebooks - Rodia and another that begins with a C...

Anyway, I was going to head downtown to the Fountain Pen Hospital, but since I wasn't buying another pen that day and was totally overwhelmed, I decided to skip it and save the trip for another day. So I went and had a cigar and a beer at Hudson Bar and Books.

On the way home, I stopped at Joon in Grand Central Terminal and picked up a bottle of Lamy ink and looked at a few more pens.

I really like how the Safari writes - not that I can compare it to other fountains. I was expecting it to be "scratchier". It’s very smooth and easy writing. Even for a lefty. It feels so much more elegant to use a tool like this compared to some disposable Bic I ripped off from work.

I'm really looking forward to getting my next pen. I like the looks of the Sheaffer Legacy - is that called an inlaid nib? Very nice. I have to try a bunch and see what feels good in the hand.

Thanks for all the great info on this board.

Sounds like you had a fun adventure! The Lamy Safari is one of my favorite pens- Good choice! As for a c. $100 pen, I'd suggest the Lamy 2000. It's light and fits nicely in my large hands. It fills only from a bottle, and is butter smooth to write with. Check out this review on it: http://www.fountainpennetwork.com/forum/in...showtopic=26083

Hi there and am glad you had fun buying. I sure wish I had the dough, so that after trying out 10, It would be easy to know which 5 to buy (har har).
For another couple of starters, how about a Pelikan M215 (of course an M400 or 600 wouldn't object) or a Waterman Charleston?
