Full Version: Pilot 90th Anniversary pen

Since Pilot had their 88th anniversary in 2006, 2008 will be their 90th. I know 8 is a significant number in asian culture which is probably why they made an 88th one when the last was done for the 80th. But then 9 is a significant number also!

The 88th anniversary pen:

I vaguely remember that Taj of pengallery.com told me that there will be a 90th anniversary pen, but he had no details at that time. That must have been may or june. Ruud

ちょっと高いと思います。残念ことですが、100周年のために蓄えるべきです。

A beautiful pair of pens, but I'd have to save up for longer than they'll remain on the market. I'll have to open a special savings account for the centenary edition.

I thought the '90' in the Pilot Stella 90 was for the 90th anniversary... It is not a special edition, but I like the idea of issuing a 'normal' pen for the commemotion, instead of a luxury one...

I just found out that there is another 90th anniversary pen "Myu90"!

Sorry it's only written in Japanese. The price is 12.600 Japanese Yen.
They are taking pre-orders now but since 9000 pieces of limited edition, I guess it won't be so hard to get it.

If this is true, I'm buying two!!! And it'll probably drive MYU prices down also...

That's more my speed, and its a MYU: I'll have to brush up on my polite Japanese, and put in an order somewhere. Alas that the quoted site doesn't appear to take overseas orders.

Interesting that I can't find info on any other places. They don't have photo, either (the photo on the store site is vintage Myurex (sp)). But the store is already taking orders, so it's probably just because Pilot hasn't announced it officially. The page says Myu 90 is made of silver-color stainless steel with hairline finish (not sure if that means striped or brushed) and a blue spinel (I guess man-made gem stone) will be set atop the cap. It comes either F or M nib. Hope they sell it overseas at the same price smile.gif

I had a look at Pilot's corporate page. There's an announcement of the more expensive pens here. I couldn't find anything about the ミュー90, however. I can't help hoping that it is true, though. A revival of the MYU would be a great celebratory pen.

Google translates the page perfectly. How much is 12,600 Yen?

According to THIS online currency converter, 12,600 Yen is the equal of about $118.23 US. If this pen really will be produced, it is a bargain compared to trying to purchase a MYU off eBay, where they can go for well over $200.00 US.

Man, if this pen really exists, I'm hoping to find a way to get one shipped to me here in the US. puddle.gif

Got a reply from SUMI RI pen shop saying he is going to sell for only about 9460 yen a pen. He is not allowed to give out too much details about the pen at the moment. The pen would be similar to MYU 701.

Is this going to affect the price of the original MYU of 1970s'?

This is clearly a usage of the word "perfectly" of which I was previously unaware...

12,600円 is a bit under $120US at the moment. It's not a stupid amount of money at all.

I just hope this isn't a hoax! Does anyone know of another reference to this pen or when the article was written?

That's an encouraging price. The link to the "rough" web page shows a Murex, not a MYU. So, either they used the wrong photo and the pen is going to be like a MYU701, or it's going to be more like the Murex. I'm hoping the MYU701.

As for it affecting the price of the original MYU, if it is an exact clone it will definitely cause them to lower in resale. If the new one is different enough, where it is similar but obviously not the same pen, the originals could actually go UP. As people become aware of the MYU due to the reintroduction, there will be more attention to the originals. Of course, there seems to be a plethora of them around these days, despite the repeated claims of some sellers that they are "rare" and that "they are getting scarce". laugh.gif

The article released the day before yesterday. on 4th of September.
This shop is a reputable stationary shop doing business more than 50 years.
I believe there is really Myu90.
I don't think they would like to ruin their reputation by getting orders for nonexistent pens.

I agree with lovelytofu, Sumi-ri is not just an online seller, but they are B&M store as well. The current owner's father or grandfather started the store, From what I read on their site. That's where I first found out about Iroshizuku-ink.

The owner does say the photo is of his vintage Murex with built-in watch (wish he showed the whole pen!). He says the 90th ann. Pen is Myu (shorter one with integrated nib). He is taking orders already (only domestically) so I really think it's for real. Pilot's official statements are always late.

Looks almost exactly like the original MYU so no stripes.

I love this sentence in the blog entry and the google translation:

Ya gotta love machine translation! lticaptd.gif

The numbers do seem to agree, though: 9000本, 12,600円.

This is a great idea for an anniversary pen.

I have been in touch with Yamada-san from Ujuku pens, and they are now taking pre-orders.

You need to give them your email address and an indication of which nib you want (M or F).

To give them some help (since they don't speak much English), here's some Japanese to cut and paste into your email:

私の注文: Pilot ミュー90
ペン先: M/F
メールアドレス:your email address here

There's now a web page for pre-orders:

I hope it is really as popular as I'm hearing... maybe it'll be enough inspiration for Pilot to make a limited run of a striped version. cloud9.gif

Do the Myu F nibs tend to be firm?

Do the Myu F nibs tend to be firm?

Yes, firm but smooth. And I doubt they could be treated to induce any flex. But you don't need it, not for this kind of pen. I have a MYU 701 that has excellent ink flow--not much pressure required to get a nice steady line. I expect the M90 will write the same way.
