Good Morning, I have just joined and am trying to learn more about these facinating tools.
I would like to start out by buying an inexpensive, but decent pen.
Some people have suggested that I start with a Waterman Phileas. Is buying a vintage (used)
pen a smart move?
Any suggestions from the membership?
P.S. I live in South Jersey, near Philadelphia.
Glad to be here,
Thanks,
Luxlover

Hi there and welcome too. Glad you joined.
Phileas was a good suggestion, I have two more:
Pelikan M215 or Waterman Charleston. They are both somewhat more expense but not all THAT much more expensive . But they are both better pens, they write better and both have a better feeling in the hand. Try them out somewhere (dipped, of course!)

Hi there! I have friends and relatives in Joisey!
The Phileas is a good starter pen, even better if you can get one of those kits with the bottle of ink and the various carts included.
Everyone has favorite pens---I'm a fan of inexpensive starter pens like the Phileas or Pelikano.

Welcome!
Buying vintage can indeed be a good experience. It's possible to get a better pen for the money than buying new! Why? Because nowadays fountain pens are such a specialty/luxury product that the production methods and quality control can be hit-or-miss.
Make sure to buy vintage pens from a reputable source who will ensure the writing condition of the pen.

Greetings and welcome from New York City. Just how much do you want to spend on a pen? What do you consider inexpensive?

Welcome Luxlover. Waterman Phileas or Kultur would be good choices for an inexpensive starter pen. Also Lamy Safari. There are many other good choices, but these are the only ones I have experience with.

I just bought a Waterman Kultur and I like it a lot---but didn't they stop making them? I had to buy mine off ebay from someone in a whole other country!

Welcome from Central New Jersey..Princeton area.
I agree. Pelikan M200, M215, or any Lamy. I love all my Lamy and you can get a Safari for around 30$- to the lamy 2000 for about 100$-120$ (piston filler). You can't go wrong with any of the pens mentioned here or in the other posts.
